What Does CAL Mean in a Car?

Usually, when you see a CAL message in your car's dashboard, it means some of the systems need calibration. The car says you need to calibrate the odometer, speedometer, ABS system, TPMS sensors, or airbags. In this modern era of computerized cars, there are many more systems than in older models and they all need calibration from time to time.

The most common reasons for calibrating the speedometer include wheel/tire changes (such as replacing the tires with a different size), wheel alignment, and trouble-shooting in odometer/speedometer problems.

The Cal message may also mean that there is something wrong with the ABS system; for example, the sensor ring is worn out, the wheel cylinders are wet due to leakage, or there is something wrong with the sensors. If you see CAL on your dashboard message screen it means that you should have your car checked on a professional station. The car mechanic will have to check the computer to see what systems need calibration and replace any parts which are faulty.
