What Does D/S Mean In A Car?

The D/S sign that you will most likely see near the transmission selector means that you may shift to Drive or Sport mode.

This means that the transmission in your car has a Sport mode. It is a special mode that increases the number of revolutions per minute in a certain gear and proves to provide a more sporty experience for the driver.

If you choose a sport mode, your car starts burning more gasoline, and you can feel a more powerful acceleration. In S mode, the car starts to behave more aggressively, as if it was really a sporty vehicle.

In D mode the vehicle will be more fuel-efficient, and this is why a lot of drivers choose D mode when they have to commute a long distance, and don't want to spend much money on gasoline. But D mode is quite boring and makes it difficult to accelerate from a complete stop.

In Sport mode, the car will take off very fast from a complete stop, and you can hear a special noise made by the engine. In S mode the car immediately reacts to your acceleration command and doesn't do much at low speed.
