What Is a Manifold in a Car?

There are two types of car manifolds, exhaust manifold, and intake manifold.

Manifold is an important part of the internal combustion engine. It's a thick metal pipe covering all cylinders in order to transfer heat and fumes between them. Usually, it has several holes so each cylinder gets its own gas/air supply for burning fuel (hence increasing power). This is the job of the intake manifold.

It also helps drawing fumes away from cylinders increasing efficiency which is especially important on modern engines where burnt gases are used again. On V6 or V8 engines, there are usually two separate manifolds for exhaust.

The manifolds should work just like a car's lungs. If they are sort of closed it means that the engine cannot breathe freely which leads to decreased performance, especially on smaller engines. It can even lead to overheating.

The manifolds are usually changed when tuning a car or to get more power out of it.
