What Is a Map Light in a Car?

You will be surprised to know that nearly all vehicles still have map lights, although drivers stopped using maps maybe a couple of decades ago. The map light is a dome light above the windshield in the front of the car. It was introduced quite long ago for better map reading, but now it's just an interior light that performs other functions.

You open the door and you see a small light turning on near the windshield. This is exactly the map light. You may usually turn it on with a button and even choose different modes. Sometimes map lights are located on the headliner just in the middle of the vehicle's interior.
The majority of map lights today use LED lighting. This is one of the most reliable and long-lasting types of lighting. Although we stopped reading maps thanks to navigation systems, we still badly need a map light in a car for a load of different purposes.
