What Is the DS Mode in BMW Cars?

The BMW Steptronic transmission offers the DS mode. This is the manual mode of automatic transmission. In a manual mode, the driver is in control of the shifting process. The transmission takes a shift request from the driver and executes it immediately. After completing one shift, the controller waits for other requests. When there are no more requests but the engine speed is too high (over 6000 RPM for most models), the transmission will choose an appropriate gear to avoid any damages.

The DS mode will allow you to drive your car in a sport mode. It won't shift until you want it to or until it's not safe for the transmission and engine anymore. The DS mode helps you to choose when the car will shift instead of the transmission controller.

But still, this is no more than just a simulation of manual shifting. You just send the commands to the controller and it decides whether it's safe and appropriate to shift to the gear you want. It means that driving in DS mode is safe and you aren't likely to damage your gearbox or engine by selecting the wrong gear or by revving up too much.
