2012 Ford Focus TCM Reprogramming - Will It Help You?

Dual-clutch transmission in the Ford Focus 3rd generation has already earned fame for being probably the most unreliable transmission in the US. PowerShift technology is really bad in terms of its super expensive clutch and faulty TCM (Transmission Control Module) that fails more often than it works optimally. But will reprogramming the TCM be needed if you replace it? Or will it help you solve the problems associated with the TCM?

Ford PowerShift transmission highlights

  • Reliability Score:Low
  • Prone to minor issues:Yes
  • Price for repair after failure:$1,500-$3,000
  • Price for replacement:$3,500-$5,000

Will you need to reprogram the TCM in PowerShift when replacing it?

Well, yes, the TCM has the information about the VIN code and you will need to reprogram it when you install the new or used one. Without relearning the TCM, you will likely not be able to shift to any gears and your transmission will most likely be dead.

I've seen several DIY transmission control module relearn procedures that are just incorrect. There is no way you can reprogram the TCM in your PowerShift transmission without actually plugging in the scanner and using proper software like Forscan or some original Ford scanning software.

Will reprogramming help you solve problems with the faulty TCM?

There is a common misconception that you can save the faulty TCM in the Ford Focus just by reprogramming it using a scanner. I can imagine that there are one or two cases when this could help. Just because the module was glitchy and then, when relearning, it was disconnected from power for some time to let it reset. Maybe, this could help.

But the chance you are that lucky is pretty bad. TCMs in Ford Focus transmissions are faulty and in the vast majority of cases they need to be replaced with new ones when broken.

How to reprogram the TCM?

If you have a good scanner for your Ford Focus and know how to use Forscan, you can do the relearn procedure on your own without paying a dollar for that. You may find video tutorials for this procedure that will obviously show you quickly how to do that, so I won't take your time writing about the procedure.

But if you don't have the proper scanner or don't know how to use Forscan, you better take the vehicle to a professional. This will not cost you a fortune. But I don't recommend dealers unless your TCM is still under warranty. Any independent shop that works with Ford vehicles will help you for reasonable money.

By the way, did you know that Ford extended the warranty for its TCMs up to 10 years or 150,000 miles? Maybe, you are still eligible to get a zero-cost replacement of the transmission control module in the dealership - check it!

Can you replace the TCM in the Ford Focus on your own?

Yes, it's just four bolts that hold this thing on the transmission and also several electrical connections. Make sure you know what you are doing before you start the process. If you can't relearn the new TCM, you will not be able to shift the car into Drive to go to the dealership. A tow truck will probably cost you more than what you would pay for TCM replacement labor.
