  5. How to find the best possible price for your old catalytic converter?

Let's get started!

Location of the 7.3 Power Stroke converters and their type

These engines will have no converters at all or one converter. Its location is usually standard - under the vehicle, between the muffler and the exhaust manifold. The converter is not very big and heavy. Up until 2002, Ford didn't use converters for these engines. But after that, the emission standards and requirements became much harder and the company had to install the cat converter.

This converter is basically the classic diesel catalytic converter that is used to reduce the amount of different harmful materials in the exhaust gasses. The cat converter is not very precious compared to many other Ford catalytic converters.

Here are some facts you should know:

  • nearly all 7.3 Power Stroke engines are quite old, so the converters are damaged or maybe they have already been replaced with aftermarket cats;
  • if you still have an original catalytic converter, it's still precious and can be sold to recycling companies or to some other businesses;
  • the amount of precious metals is just average - nothing special you will find in these converters, even though the capacity of the engines is quite big;
  • it's not that easy to buy OEM cat converters for the trucks equipped with the 7.3 Power Stroke, but aftermarket options are available;
  • these catalytic converters are hard to recycle and they don't give a lot of precious materials, so they are not very expensive;
  • not all companies will want to pay a lot of money for the diesel cat converter, especially for the 7.3 Power Stroke cat.

OK, now you understand a little about this engine and cat converter you know some important things you should be aware of when you have this catalytic converter in your hands.

When we were trying to get actual prices from different companies, we were told many insane things. One company even said that these catalytic converters don't contain titanium, so they didn't want to pay a lot for them. But the thing is that only some cat converters contain titanium.

The 7.3 Power Stroke catalytic converter contains platinum, palladium, and a little rhodium. It doesn't have a lot of these metals, but still, it can make some revenue for a recycling company.

How much should a 7.3 Power Stroke scrap cat converter cost?

So, now we will speak about the most interesting part. How much can you get for an old 7.3 Power Stroke catalytic converter? It depends on many facts, but the average price should be anywhere between $60 and $100. It's not much compared to big cats from gasoline cars, but it's not $10 like you may have been thinking before.

And still, you may go to a local scrapyard and say that you read in one article they should pay you $100 for a cat converter. They will laugh and offer you $15 instead. Why? Because you need to know how to sell your catalytic converter in order to get some money.

The price will not only depend on this. It depends on many factors:

  • the year and type of the converter - Ford used some types and they had the different weights of precious metals in them;
  • the condition of your catalytic converter - unfortunately, shabby and rusty converters with holes in their bodies are not expensive;
  • the price for precious metals that are found in this Ford converter - the market prices change nearly every day;
  • the person or company you are going to sell your catalytic converter to - this is also an important factor.

So, what you can do is actually find a good place to sell your old catalytic converter. All other factors don't depend on you and you can't change them. Well, you can clean your catalytic converter and find its serial number. Also, you can take good pictures of it to show to the potential buyer.

These things will help you get the best price offer. But what you shouldn't do is sell the catalytic converter from your 7.3 Power Stroke at a low price. You will be able to find some other options and ways to sell the cat and get much more money.

Why are diesel converters cheaper than gasoline ones?

It's hard to explain, but there are two main factors. Firstly, diesel converters have a little less precious metals inside. This is an important factor that is crucial for counting the estimated price of a cat converter. Also, diesel cats are harder to recycle. They contain more parts that are aimed to clean the exhaust gasses in different stages. And some diesel converters just don't contain any precious metals (some DPF cats), so they aren't bought for more than $10.

But the 7.3 Power Stroke catalytic converter is not bad at all in terms of the price. Yes, it's cheaper than the gasoline converter from the engine with the same displacement, but it still costs some money.

If we are talking about the 7.3 Power Stroke converters, they are relatively cheap because they are old. Usually, these cats are shabby and in a bad condition which means companies have big risks when they buy these cats.

Where should you sell the Ford diesel converter?

Now, one of the most important questions is where you should sell the cat converter. You can choose between scrapyards, repair shops, middlemen, private buyers, and recycling companies. We would start our price investigation from recycling companies. They can be much more generous than any other buyer because they are the last point in the life of a used converter.

It means that nearly all converters end up lying in the production sites of these companies. All other buyers are just resellers who try to earn money on your converter.

Here's how you can sell your cat to a recycling company:

  1. Take the get off the vehicle and cut the exhaust pipe. Look at the condition of the ceramic honeycomb and take pictures of the cat converter.
  2. When taking pictures, make sure that you can see the serial number and the honeycomb in these pics.
  3. After that, find some recycling companies online and look at their websites. Find some ways to get a quote. Usually, it's very easy to do.
  4. Send pictures to these companies and ask them to name their price. Usually, they work fast, in one day you will have all offers ready.
  5. Compare the offers. Be careful - read the rules and see which companies pay for shipping, it's important in your case.
  6. Decide which company offers the best price and then just sell your old catalytic converter.

It sounds easy. And it actually is easy to do. All you need to do is to take pictures of your converter and send them to help companies understand what they are going to buy. Specialists will come up with the estimated price and then you'll be able to choose from different offers.

Of course, you can still sell your 7.3 Power Stroke catalytic converter by yourself. You can go to eBay or some other website and advertise your old cat for sale. This may even bring you more money in the end. But there is one bad thing about this idea - it will take you a lot of time. You will need to spend months until you find your client.

Final words

We don't recommend you sell a 7.3 Power Stroke catalytic converter to the first company that is ready to buy it. Check some other companies - maybe, they will want to offer you more money. And eventually, you can get about $100 which is the maximum price for this type of converter.

We think that recycling companies are the best for selling your cat. But we insist that you should check prices in all possible places. Maybe, a year after this article is published something will change and scrapyards will offer even more money for your cat.
