We all had some time in our life when we were dreaming about a Lexus. Especially, about those cool Lexus SUVs that were the top-luxury cars and were out of our budget. But now you don't have to be Elon Musk to buy a Lexus. If you are OK with used cars, you can get one for the price of a new Ford Fiesta or even much cheaper.
We thought, what about leasing an old Lexus car? Can you get the vehicle with a leasing program if it's not new? And how much will you pay for a Lexus GX470, for example?
We've made an investigation and we are going to tell you something about leasing an old Lexus. Spoiler: it's possible but you will not want to do it if you read the rules carefully.

Here are the main points of today's article:
- Can you lease a used Lexus SUV and how much will you pay?
- Why is leasing a Lexus GX470 a bad idea?
- Why can you still want to get an old Lexus SUV?
- What are some alternative ways of getting a GX470?
Let's get started!
Can you lease a used Lexus SUV like a GX470?
First of all, let's check that we are speaking about the same model. The GX470 was first introduced in 2002. In 2007, Lexus introduced the facelifted version. And in 2009, the model was replaced with the Lexus GX460 in the manufacturer's lineup.
So, the freshest Lexus GX470 will be a 13-year-old car. And it's not going to be a very valuable item for leasing companies. Actually, there are some bad things that make this vehicle bad for a leasing company.
Here are some of them:
- this is an old car and the depreciation has already done everything it could, the price of the vehicle is too low;
- the vehicle is going to be broken many times before the leasing contract is expired, and this is one more important problem;
- dealers can't sell this vehicle as a Certified Pre-owned car (CPO) and can't get a lot of revenue for this SUV;
- nobody is going to offer you any warranty for a vehicle that is 13 or even 20 years old because this is insane;
- most of these cars will have over 150,000 miles on the clock, and this is ridiculous to apply leasing programs for such vehicles.
You may know that leasing personal cars in the USA is strictly regulated by law. If a dealer breaks the law and doesn't provide the services it has to provide, you will go to court and get a lot of money as compensation. So, no one wants to trick clients.
And this is one of the reasons you will not find nearly any leasing offers for the Lexus GX470. But still, you can find some dealers with huge prices and bad leasing conditions that are ready to sell you this vehicle under a leasing agreement. But should you buy one? Let's see.
Why is leasing a Lexus GX470 a bad idea?
In the previous part of this article, we discussed why companies may not want to deal with a Lexus GX470 and a leasing contract. But will you want to get involved in this? We doubt it. And in this section, we'll try to explain to you why.
The reason is that leasing such a car means getting some really bad conditions of a leasing contract. Just because no company will agree to sign a good contract just like when you buy a new vehicle.
And here are some other reasons:
- more often than not, you will not have the option to return your car to the dealer at any moment;
- you will have to repair your vehicle because it will not have a warranty;
- when the leasing contract is over, you will have to buy the car or return it in the same condition as it was, say, three years ago;
- the mileage of these cars is going to be high, and you will have to spend a lot of money to maintain a vehicle in a good condition;
- if your vehicle is broken hard and can't be repaired, you will have to pay the full remaining price to the dealer;
- you will constantly have some minor problems and will still have to pay a monthly payment according to your contract.
Unfortunately, leasing is only good when the car you buy is new or at least very fresh. If dealers sell used cars under a leasing contract, they usually offer vehicles with low mileage, under 60,000 miles, and under 4-5 years of age.
If you even find a Lexus SUV available with a leasing option, think twice before you make any decision about it. It may be a very bad decision in terms of your budget.
Do you still want to lease a Lexus GX470?
Well, we understand you because nearly any person on our team was a fan of this model 10 years ago. It's still a reliable SUV with a lot of luxury things not many new cars have. And it still makes a GX470 a good choice.
But you should be careful when you buy such a car. First of all, try to find a good option with optimal mileage. Avoid older years, better buy an after-facelift version (2007-2009). And also avoid high-mileage cars. Lexus SUVs are known to be very expensive to maintain when they are old and have high mileage on the clock.
Here are still some good things you will get:
- Comfort. Your new (not very new) car will be as comfortable as you have always dreamt of. It's one of the best luxury SUVs in history, by the way.
- A lot of luxury options. Even the cheapest version of the GX470 had a lot of technologies and options inside because they were sold for insane money when they were new.
- Some of these cars are still in good condition. If you manage to find a Lexus with less than 100,000 miles, you may buy it, it should be a good car.
- It's an all-purpose vehicle. You can use a GX470 for city driving, highways, Uber, towing trailers, going off-roading, and many other things.
- These vehicles are reliable. These are basically Toyotas, they are simple to repair and very durable. Here, we have an article about the longevity of the Lexus GX470.
- They are still beautiful. We can't say that they still look modern, it's not true. But their brutal design makes these SUVs really cool to drive.
Yes, these Japanese SUVs are really fun to drive. They are pretty comfortable and cool-looking. You will also get a lot of great emotions when driving these cars.
But anyway, the Lexus GX470 is not a new car and you should be careful when buying it. We don't recommend leasing and are going to present you with some ideas on how to get a car without leasing.
Alternatives to leasing when buying the GX470
Unfortunately, these cars aren't that cheap because they are often bought as project vehicles for off-roading. Buyers then lift them, make a lot of tuning, and use these Lexus SUVs as off-road vehicles for different competitions or just for fun.
So, the cheapest Lexus GX470 we could find was a vehicle with a broken engine and it cost $7,000. While a vehicle with 150,000 miles and no broken elements will cost around $16,000 if we are talking about the 2006 year or something like this.
So, here's how you can buy this car and avoid leasing:
- Save up some money and buy for cash. It may sound too complicated, but you can sell your old car, save up some money, borrow some money from your friend and finally buy this vehicle without paying monthly leasing payments.
- Buy a car with a loan. There are numerous banks that are ready to give you loans for used vehicles. Of course, this will not be very cheap in terms of interest, but it's not a bad option.
- Find a Lexus GX470 that is sold by a private owner. You can always bargain and get a better price, but dealers usually sell their cars at much higher prices.
- Get a broken car from an auction. If you are lucky enough, you can buy a Lexus GX47- for $3,000 or $4,000 after a minor accident. Then, you can repair the vehicle and have it eventually much cheaper than you would buy one from a dealer.
You should be careful with leasing an old car. It's not only problematic but actually dangerous. Unfortunately, a GX470 is not a good option for leasing.
Final words
You can have any vehicle you want, but be careful with choosing the way to buy it. One of the most important factors is that the car shouldn't be a financial burden for you. So, better drive your old Focus until you save up some money to buy a GX470 or maybe even a better vehicle. And remember that leasing an old car is never a good idea.
