  • Types of cat converters that are used in Blazer vehicles.
  • How much should a Chevy Blazer old converter cost?
  • Where should you sell the catalytic converter from your Blazer?
  • How much is a replacement cat converter for the Chevy SUV?

Let's get started!

What kinds of cats are used in Chevy Blazer vehicles?

A Blazer is not one certain model that you can easily determine. The name first appeared in 1969 for the K5 Blazer which was a frame-based off-road vehicle. Then, the name was also used for the S-10 Blazer SUV built between 1983 and 2012. Finally, in 2019 the company introduced a compact SUV called Blazer.

In this article, we'll be focusing on the S-10 Blazer and the new Blazer because these are the vehicles that are still on the roads in some quantity. The older K5 Blazers are almost all dead now. But if you own one with the OEM cat converter, you can sell it, too.

So, here's something you should know about the converters in your Blazer:

  • in most older vehicles there was one main catalytic converter that was located in the exhaust system, neat the muffler;
  • in the newest Blazers, there are a couple of engine options that decide which kind of cat converter assembly you'll have in the car;
  • new V6 engines come with two pre-cats and one main cat while a turbocharged L4 engine has one pre-cat and one main converter;
  • all cat converters in Blazer models contain some precious metals - these are platinum, palladium, and also rhodium;
  • new cats don't have as much precious metals as older ones, but they still can be sold at a decent price;
  • most GM cats will go over 150,000 miles, but after that, some of them will require replacement or cleaning.

Most Chevy Blazer owners will have to replace cat converters once they are clogged. The engines are pretty durable with some of them being able to hit the 300,000-mile mark. So, you should consider some way to prolong the life of the exhaust cleaning system. And the best option is to replace the cat.

Catalytic converters in your Blazer will go bad because of overheating, bad fuel quality, or bumping over something on the road. Given Blazer is an off-road vehicle or an SUV, many owners hit bad roads with it and put their converters into a dangerous environment. So, it's not a rare thing when a Blazer owner wants to sell a clogged or slightly damaged converter.

How much can you get for the Chevy Blazer converter?

The catalytic converter can cost a lot if it's an old and big cat with a lot of precious metals inside. But in most cases, the prices will not be as good as you may dream about. Also, to sell a Blazer cat for good money, you need to have a converter that is still in good condition. It may not be working properly, but it shouldn't be damaged heavily.

So, we believe that the average price for a converter from your Blazer should be between $100 and $220. Newer models will have less expensive cats while older models from the 1980s and 1990s as well as from the 2000s may have more expensive converters in their exhaust systems.

Here are some factors that always influence the price:

  • the condition of the converter - as we've said before, the condition is extremely important, it can make the price higher or lower;
  • the type and year of the cat - the best way to learn this is to find the serial number and to check the contents of your converter in some catalog;
  • the prices for precious metals - it's the key factor that will obviously change the offered price for your converter every week of the year;
  • the way you are selling the Blazer cat - be careful and avoid selling the converter to any companies that offer you just a little money.

So, the price may vary from day to day because the market of precious metals is not standing still - it moves and sometimes the changes are dramatic. It means that the revenue a company may get from your cat after recycling it will vary, too.

Also, the important thing that you can totally control is the place where you sell the converter. In most cases, Americans will immediately think about a scrapyard when they have a broken or clogged cat converter from their Chevy Blazer in their hands. But this is one of the worst thoughts you may have.

Who to sell a Chevrolet Blazer catalytic converter to?

All those scrapyards, middlemen, exhaust mechanics, repair shops, and auto part stores are not the best ways to sell your cat converter from a Blazer Yes, these companies will be happy to buy your converter, but they will offer up to $50 or $70 only depending on their wish. They are not going to recycle your cat. The only thing they can do is to resell it and earn money immediately.

So, you should find some better options if you still want to get some money for your cats. We know about two possible options that will suit you in different cases.

Here are both of them:

  • eBay. It's a great option to sell the cat from your Chevy Blazer, but it's OK for those only who have still working cat converters that are able to pass the fog test. Otherwise, no one on eBay is going to buy it. Also, you will need to wait for a buyer and this can be a long time.
  • Recycling companies. One more option that is suitable for all catalytic converters is recycling companies. You can sell your converter to one of them and get much more money than from a scrapyard. These companies actually recycle your cat and take out the precious metals and then sell them.

So, these two options will allow you to sell a cat at a good price. All other ways will give you less money which is probably not the best option if you have an OEM converter. For aftermarket cats from the Blazer, it doesn't matter much who to sell the part to.

Also, choose several recycling companies if you decide to go this way. If you choose several companies, you'll be able to compare the prices that they offer. It's a great way to earn more because you will be able to choose the company offering more money than others. Comparison is always the best option in this case.

What kind of replacement cat can you buy?

You can't drive your vehicle in America if it doesn't have the catalytic converter in its system. But the physical presence of a cat converter doesn't automatically make your car legal. It should work efficiently, and to check this there is a special procedure called a fog test. If your fog test shows bad emissions, you will not be legal on the road with your Blazer.

So, if a cat converter goes bad, you will have to do something to rearrange the system and make it eco-friendly again.

Here are your choices for the Chevy Blazer:

  • The new OEM General Motors converter that would probably cost over $1,600 and even more for big units. A really good choice for new cars only. If your Blazer is old, investing that much in it is not rational.
  • The used OEM converter. It may seem like a good option but actually, this cat is bad for you because you never know how long it will go. Unfortunately, they usually go just some months and die.
  • New aftermarket catalytic converter. If you buy a $200 cat converter, it isn't likely to be a good and long-lasting purchase. But a more expensive option should be OK for your vehicle.

Final words

If you own a Chevrolet Blazer, you may sooner or later need this article to sell your old cat. Just remember that a recycling company is almost always the best possible idea you can get. Also, remember that you will need a replacement option for your broken cat.

In most cases, you will not be able to cover the replacement costs just by selling the cat converter. But anyway, why should you just let the old cat rest somewhere in your garage? Better get some money and make a positive impact by sending more recycling materials to the industry.
