Chevrolet Equinox has long been one of the most popular SUVs on the American market. This is the vehicle that corresponds with all American traditional requirements for a vehicle. It's not small, very comfortable, it looks nice, and is pretty reliable. But anyway, you are going to have problems with its catalytic converter if you drive this SUV for long enough to kill this part.
In this article, we'll figure out how much you can get if you sell the old OEM catalytic converter from your Chevy Equinox. What's the scrap price of the part? Talking about the Equinox, we should say that the vehicle doesn't have extremely large and expensive converters. But still, you shouldn't just lose this money after you replace the cat or decide to scrap the vehicle.
Here's what we are going to talk about:
- What types of converters does Chevy use in its Equinox?
- How much money can you get if you sell the old OEM Equinox converter?
- What should you know to sell the old converter at a higher price?
- How long do Chevy Equinox converters live, on average?
Let's get started!
What are the types and locations of Equinox converters?
So, the first generation of the Equinox was offered to American buyers in 2005. Since then, the vehicle has already changed three generations and is going to change to another one soon. But the latest generation is not of any interest to us today because it was launched in 2018 and we haven't heard a single case with converter problems yet.
But older Equinox models can surprise you with how fast they get these problems. Converters are pretty small and they just don't keep up with the amount of gas the SUV's engines send through them. This makes them burn faster and require replacement which is sometimes pretty bad for your budget.
So, here's what you should know about Equinox converters:
- we are talking about the first and the second generations of the vehicles that had V6 and later also L4 engines;
- most Equinox models will have a pre-cat or two pre-cats in the system - they are located near exhaust manifolds;
- main catalytic converters are somewhat bigger and placed near the muffler, they are protected by heat screens, so it's not hard to locate them;
- while pre-cats are not very valuable and hardly ever require replacement, main cats contain platinum, palladium, and rhodium, so they cost some money;
- if your main catalytic converter in the Equinox is clogged or broken, cleaning it won't make any sense, replacement is the only possible option;
- only OEM cats can be sold at good money, aftermarket converters will not earn a lot of dollars for you.
Now, it's not that difficult to distinguish between OEM and aftermarket catalytic converters. Aftermarket ones are usually smaller, and lighter, and they rust like hell. Also, OEM converters are solid, heavy, and big, and they have the serial number on their body as well as the Chevy logo. If you have the OEM cat, you can sell it easily and earn some money.
Everything we'll tell you later today will be true for OEM converters only. If you just discovered that the cat in your car is not OEM, you may also sell it but for $20 or something like that. The best strategy in this case is to just go to a scrapyard near you and sell the cat there.
How long do Chevy Equinox catalytic converters last?
On average, an OEM catalytic converter in your Chevy Equinox may last up to 150,000 miles. Sometimes, the first problems come at 100K miles but you still can drive your vehicle without a lot of problems.
If the cat converter in your Equinox is clogged, the vehicle will lose power, turn on the check engine light, and jerk when accelerating. Sometimes, it may go limp mode because of problems with breathing.
The engine just can't breathe when one of the converters is clogged. It means that the vehicle will have to be repaired, otherwise, the engine will just stall. Cutting off the cat converter is not an option because your vehicle's emissions will be filled up with harmful elements that destroy the environment.
So, the only good option is to replace the converter. For this, you will need some money. And here selling the old converter will help you get at least some compensation for your expenses.
What's the average scrap price of an Equinox converter?
In your Chevrolet Equinox, there are two types of converters. Pre-cats rarely require replacement. But you can still them if they are clogged. The average price for any Equinox pre-cat (OEM) is $50-$60. It's not a lot, but the replacement parts are also not that expensive.
The OEM main converter will cost more. For a V6 engine, we would say that the averages scrap catalytic converter price is about $220. For an L4 engine, the price of a scrap cat should be around $150.
Different engines and model years may have different sizes of cats, so it's hard to come up with a certain price. We can't give you a more precise price, but we can tell you how you can get to know it by spending just about half an hour. Keep reading to find out more.
What will influence the price of your Equinox converter?
You may have heard that before selling an old catalytic converter, wise people make some kind of investigation. They ask different people and companies about the price for their cat and they find the best option. Why? Because the difference may be huge! Also, some people even wait until the prices for cats grow up and only then sell their converters from old Chevy Equinox.
Here are some of the most important factors that can change the price of your Chevy converter:
- market prices for precious metals - the key factor that decides it for your converter;
- the year and model of the vehicle which show the kind of converter used in the SUV;
- the serial number placed on your converter - this decides the type of the cat and the amount of metals you can get out of it;
- the size and weight of the converter - if the serial number is not readable, specialists can figure out the price by looking at these parameters;
- the person or the company that you sell your catalytic converter to.
While one company offers you $50 for the OEM cat from the Chevrolet Equinox, the other one may give you more than $200 for the same part. It's not wise to just sell the cat to the first buyer who offers some money to you.
We'll tell you who you can sell the cat to and how exactly you can choose the buyer to get the best possible price.
Who will buy the old cat from your Equinox?
There are quite a lot of companies and private buyers who are interested in getting your catalytic converter. They may even be located in your city or town. But you shouldn't care much about shipping. We'll tell you later why.
Also, searching for a proper buyer may not be that difficult currently, they are all presented online and you can get the needed information in just some minutes.
Here are some of the most obvious buyers you may sell your Chevy Equinox cat converter to:
- just some scrapyards you may find in your area - they don't pay a lot though;
- eBay - you may try to advertise your cat converter from the Equinox online if it still works;
- private buyers - in most cases, they will aim to buy your cat cheaper and then just resell it, a bad option;
- car mechanics and shops - they also buy out cat converters but still don't pay much;
- recycling companies - these are the best buyers in terms of comfort and prices.
So, we clearly recommend recycling companies. They are good in terms of what they offer. You can find them online, send them pictures of your catalytic converter and just wait until they offer their price. Also, you may try it with different companies and eventually get the highest price you can hope for.
Also, recycling companies, in most cases, will pay for shipping. That's why we told you before you shouldn't have worried about shipping. Sometimes, the company that offers a good price for your cat is located in another state. And shipping would just take half of your revenue. But if the company pays for that, you just don't care where it is located.
Final words
We highly recommend considering recycling companies for your scrap cat converter sale. If your Chevy Equinox is about to stall because of the clogged converter, the best decision is to delete the cat and install the new one instead. The old OEM cat from your Chevy SUV may be sold and you shouldn't lose this chance.
Investigate the market using the given recommendations and just find the person or the company ready to pay you more money than all others.
