Here's what we are going to talk about:

  1. What types of cat converters do Chrysler cars usually have?
  2. Chrysler catalytic converters scrap value - how much will you get?
  3. Where can you sell a Chrysler cat converter?
  4. How often will you need to replace a catalytic converter in a Chrysler?

Let's get started!

What types of cats are installed in Chrysler cars?

Chrysler vehicles (under such brands as Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Fiat, RAM) all have original Chrysler converters and also sometimes cats from different manufacturers with Chrysler badges and logos on them to identify them as original converters. Dozens of models use different types of converters, but usually, these are classic bread-loaf cats.

We can't say that Chrysler catalytic converters are exclusively original and cost more than other types of cats, but they are desired by recycling companies. Yes, they don't contain an enormous amount of precious metal but they are of high quality and you can easily differentiate between them thanks to the serial number on their bodies.

Here are some important outlines:

  • the majority of the Chrysler catalytic converters are mid-sized, whatever model they are installed in;
  • these cats usually contain platinum, palladium, and rhodium, so they are valuable unless the price of the metals goes down;
  • also, Chrysler catalytic converters are not prone to damage and rust, they are very reliable and long-lasting;
  • the ceramic honeycomb in these cats is usually in a good condition, it's good for the price of the scrap converter;
  • the location of the converters depends on the model of the vehicle - usually near the muffler and also near the exhaust manifold;
  • some Chrysler vehicles will have only one cat while some others may have three or four of them in the assembly.

One of the most important things is that Chrysler cats are made of good materials, so they still look good even after years of use. It helps buyers easily differentiate between the models just by looking at the picture of the cat. So, these catalytic converters are really good for remote sales. And this will help you get the best price offers.

Remember that after one or some of the cat converters malfunction, you need to solve the problem because the vehicle will not go well and it won't pass the fog test. Replacing the catalytic converter is not the cheapest thing you've ever done with your vehicle. Especially, if you want to install new OEM converters.

What's the scrap price of Chrysler old cat converters?

The scrap price of any catalytic converter is defined by a couple of factors. First of all, make sure you have a Chrysler original cat. Because otherwise, you will only be able to sell it for $20 or something like that. Any aftermarket converters cost as much as the original ones.

You may be sure that the converter is OEM if you've been driving this car since you bought it from a dealer. Also, you may make sure that the cat is OEM and is really valuable. For this, please have a look at the serial number and the logo on the body of the cat. Once you see these signs, you may be sure the converter is OEM.

Here's what can change the price of a cat converter:

  • precious metals prices - they can be lower or higher day by day, and this affects the eventual price of your old cats;
  • the average price for converters on the market - you can investigate it in forums or on eBay where people advertise their converters for sale;
  • the type and size of the cat you are holding in your hands, also its age may change the price significantly;
  • one more important thing is the condition of the cat converter - damaged Chrysler cats are not bought at high prices;
  • finally, the price will depend on the person or the company buying the cat converter from you.

You shouldn't think that the converter will cost hundreds of dollars. Some big Chrysler cats may be worth $300 or something like that. But the average scrap price of a Chrysler catalytic converter should be around $140. Smaller cats and pre-cats will sell cheaper - at about $80 each, but bigger ones will get an average maximum price of $200.

The more precise price offer will depend on the factors listed above. Also, each specialist will use their own standards to calculate the price of the converters. What you can do to get a really better price is to find a better buyer. Is that hard to do? Let's see!

How to sell your Chrysler catalytic converter at a better price?

Selling the old Chrysler catalytic converter is possible via different methods. You can choose each of them and each one will have some advantages. But you should remember about prices. The best price is only possible in one type of company buying out catalytic converters.

Here are some of the possible ways to sell the cat converter from your Chrysler vehicle:

  1. Scrapyards. Probably, this is the first option you thought about. But we don't recommend scrapyards as they don't pay good money. They try to get the converters at low prices and then resell them.
  2. Middlemen. You can find people ready to give you some cash for the cat converter. They will tell you that no one will ever give you more money. Don't believe them - these are resellers who earn by selling cats at more expensive prices to numerous companies.
  3. eBay. You can advertise your Chrysler scrap catalytic converter for sale on eBay or on any other website. This will make you wait a lot but eventually, you may get a normal price.
  4. Recycling companies. This is what we suggest you should choose. Recycling companies are pretty fair with their clients, they compete with each other and fight for the right to buy your cat converter.

To sell your catalytic converter to a recycling company, take some pictures of it and send these pictures to a couple of companies asking them to come up with their price offers. Then just compare these offers and get more money for your cat.

This works really well, especially if you need to sell the cat quickly and don't want to wait for a buyer on eBay. Also, recycling companies are usually the final destinations of cat converters, so all other resellers will try to sell their cats to these companies. Just make this money by yourself.

How often will you have to replace a catalytic converter in your Chrysler?

The problem with your catalytic converter will occur at 100,000 miles or a little later. Chrysler cats are pretty durable and they are placed in such a way that pre-cats take an entire load of heat. Main converters are ready to work longer. But eventually, they will all clog or get damaged and you will have to replace them.

One single main cat made by Chrysler (OEM converter) will cost from $800 for a small unit to $1,800 for a big converter. The assembly may cost up to $3,000. So, a lot of Chrysler owners prefer buying aftermarket converters. They have two problems: it's hard to sell them at a good price and also they don't live as long as original Chrysler cats.

You should consider cat converter replacement in your Chrysler vehicle when the following symptoms occur:

  • the engine loses power at higher RPMs;
  • acceleration becomes too poor;
  • you can feel the disgusting exhaust smell;
  • cat converter is damaged;
  • check engine light flashes on with codes of oxygen sensors;
  • cat converter is rattling or making other noises.

Once these problems appear, you will need to check the catalytic converter. Some of them are precise symptoms of the cat's death, but some may occur in different situations.

Final words

If you want to sell your Chrysler catalytic converter at a better price, you can easily do it using recycling companies and their websites. This will offer you some prices and you will be able to choose between them. Unfortunately, scrapyards don't offer really good prices, although they are the most popular places for selling old converters. You should try and find a different way.

Remember that only original Chrysler cat converters can be sold at good prices. Aftermarket cats can be sold to scrapyards for 10-20 dollars.
