Dodge Durango Catalytic Converter Scrap Price. We Know The Average

Americans love big SUVs. So, the American company Dodge, governed by another American company Crysler, knows what can sell well in the American market. The Dodge Durango is one of the most successful models of the brand. We love this vehicle. It's huge, it can go off-roading, it can give you comfort, and it doesn't cause many problems. At least, the owners say so.

We know that the Dodge Durango will still have some problems with its exhaust system, just like nearly every other car on the market. At 100 000 miles (sometimes a little later), its catalytic converter is going to fail. And you will need to buy a new one, spend a lot of money to pass the next fog test. Can you sell the old Dodge Durango catalytic converter at a good price?

Today, we'll be speaking about the following:

  1. Durango cat scrap price - how much should it cost?
  2. Why do so many people sell original Dodge (Crysler) converters so cheaply?
  3. How to sell the Durango converter directly to recycling companies?
  4. What to buy instead of a malfunctioning cat converter?

Let's get started!

Scrap price and type of a Durango converter

Dodge Durango has been there since 1997. It has already changed the class several times: from a mid-sized SUV to a full-sized SUV and then back to a mid-sized SUV. The vehicle has already had 3 generations and we don't know about the fourth one which Dodge fans have been expecting since 2018 or something.

You know that the type of converters that are installed in a car depends much on the type of engine. And in all three generations of the Durango, the company has used wonderful big-displacement engines starting with 3.6-liter and finishing with 6.4-liter ones. All the engines have big Chrysler converters and some of them can really cost a lot.

To understand the price of your converter, you will need to know the following factors:

  • the cat's serial number - it's located somewhere on the converter but it can be covered with rust, just clean it a little;
  • the type of engine - usually, you can understand the type of a cat just by knowing the model of the engine;
  • the origin - aftermarket cats don't cost much, but the OEM Chrysler cats are not so bad when you sell them;
  • condition - if your cat has holes in its body and you can see that the ceramic section is damaged, you will not sell the converter at a good price;
  • year - sometimes even the same engines in different years used different types of converters.

Once you know all these factors or at least some of them, you can understand how much money you can earn when selling your converter. When we were researching for this article, we've bumped into some insane predictions. The internet says that you can sell a Chrysler cat for $300 to $1500 and we totally disagree with these opinions.

The scrap price of a Dodge Durango catalytic converter is between $150 and $280 depending on the model, engine, year, condition, and also on the prices for precious metals. The maximum price of a new Hemi engine cat converter can be around $400 for a set of two cats. By the way, a lot of Durango models will have two cats.

What to buy instead of an original converter?

Now you know that you will most likely get something between $150 and $300 for the converters from your Dodge Durango. Here comes the question - what should you buy instead? You shouldn't waste your time and money on those cheap tiny converters that cost $200. They will not allow you to pass the fog test.

When you buy a new converter for your Durango, you basically have three choices:

  1. A new original cat. This is the most expensive option. OEM cats cost around $2000 for a set of converters if you are lucky enough to get them with a discount.
  2. A new aftermarket cat. You can buy decent aftermarket cats for about $500 each if you have two of them and $800 if you have a single one. Cheaper options will not be very good.
  3. A used OEM cat. Used original catalytic converters are risky to buy because they may be destroyed. But some of them are remanufactured or repaired and they are OK. Prices vary from $200 to $1000.

We don't recommend buying cheap aftermarket cats. Also, expensive aftermarket parts will not live long. Their lifespan is around three times shorter than the life of the original cats. But sometimes they can save your budget. For example, if your Durango has already gone 250 000 miles, you can buy aftermarket cats and drive your vehicle for another 50 000 miles before you sell it.

Why do people often sell their Durango converters cheaply?

The thing is that a lot of Dodge owners just don't know that the catalytic converters contain precious metals like platinum, palladium, and rhodium. When they take their old converters to a scrapyard and a worker tells them those cats cost $40 each, they agree. They don't even know that these cats contain $1000-worth amount of precious metals and so they look at the rusty thing and consider it's good that they can get $40 or something.

That's why a lot of people just lose their money and need to invest more in new catalytic converters. But you should remember that recycling companies will take some grams of precious metals out of your converter and they will earn some money. It means that they shouldn't agree to get just a couple of dollars. And now we are going to show you how you can sell the Durango converter at a better price.

Selling a converter directly to recycling companies

First of all, you should know that you can sell your cat in many different ways. For example, you can sell it to your friend, to your mechanic, or to a scrapyard. You can advertise it for sale on eBay or at any local forum. You can even sell it at the local flea market if you have something like that near you. But these options will not bring you a lot of money.

We know only one way of selling the converter and getting more money - it's selling directly to recycling companies. You may think it's complicated, but you should know that these companies have already made it easy for clients to sell their cat converters.

Here's how it happens:

  1. You go online and find a website of the company that recycles catalytic converters. Usually, you can find 5 and more of these companies.
  2. Then you follow the instructions given on the website and inquire about the price.
  3. They will most likely ask you to take pictures of your converter so that they could see that the part is OK and it's an OEM cat.
  4. These companies will send you an offer with a certain price. The more companies you contact, the more offers you get.
  5. You just choose the best offer and sell your converter. Usually, they even offer free shipping.

This is the most comfortable way of selling your cat converter and getting more money. You can see that the prices on eBay are approximately the same. But you will need to wait for months until your converter is bought. Also, private sales can give you more money, but no one knows how much time you'll spend waiting for the buyer.

Selling your converter online is anyway one of the best options you can think of. But always inquire in different companies to get the best price offer.

How much will they earn with your Dodge Durango converter?

It may seem that the recycling companies earn millions because they buy converters cheaply and then sell the precious metals at high prices. Just count: they will get more than $1000 when they sell all the metals they will get out of your cat converter that was sold to them for $200. But things are a little more complicated.

Shipping costs, production costs, taxes, salaries, market price fluctuations, and other factors sometimes take over half of their overall revenue. It means they will earn approximately $100-$200 from every big converter they buy. So, the price they offer is not that bad and it's quite fair. Unfortunately, taking out those precious metals is not a simple task and you will not be able to do it in your garage.

Final words

The best way to get rid of your Dodge Durango scrap catalytic converter is to sell it to a recycling company. This way, you will get some money, and the big cat will not just take some place in your garage. Also, you will compensate for some money that you have already spent on a new catalytic converter. Don't lose this chance to get some compensation and use the most lucrative method for you.
