Dodge Journey Catalytic Converter Scrap Price – How to Get Good Price?

Dodge Journey is a popular American family vehicle that is essentially equipped with a catalytic converter. Once this part is broken or clogged, the owner of the vehicle may sell it and get revenue. At least, they can compensate for the repair or replacement of the cat because it also comes at a high price, usually.

A Dodge Journey will have a large Chrysler cat, in most cases, thanks to a big-displacement engine under the hood. It means you can get decent money for the cat even after it starts malfunctioning.

In this article, we'll talk about the scrap price of a catalytic converter from your Dodge Journey. Do you know how much you can earn? Just keep reading to get the idea of it.

Here's what we are going to talk about:

What kind of catalytic converter do you have in your Dodge Journey?

  1. What are the scrap prices for these cats, on average?
  2. How can you get a better price for a Dodge Journey catalytic converter?
  3. Will you have to install a new converter to a Dodge Journey?

Let's get started!

What kind of a converter does Dodge Journey have?

This vehicle was made from 2009 to 2020 and then it was discontinued because of low sales and no budget for new generation development. The Dodge Journey was a popular car, though. Americans loved it for space, comfort, great power, and wonderful classic looks that didn't age much over time.

The Journey was equipped with a set of engines starting with the 2.4 L4 and up to the 3.6 V6 Pentastar. Diesel engines weren't popular in the US, they were mainly sold in Europe in a vehicle called Fiat Freemont (the same as Journey but for the European market).

Here's what we know about the Journey converters:

  • most vehicles had two or three cats (the V6 engines usually had three converters because of the construction factors);
  • one of the cats is the main cat which is big and costs some money, while the other ones are pre-cats which are significantly cheaper as scrap parts;
  • these catalytic converters should be classified as "domestic" and their size depends on the engine model and year of the vehicle;
  • usually, these converters have serial numbers and the Dodge or Chrysler logo on their bodies, which means they are OEM;
  • unfortunately, all aftermarket catalytic converters are way less expensive and they will only cost $20 or something like that;
  • the average lifespan of a Dodge Journey catalytic converter is about 10 years or 120,000 miles which is a little above average.

If you go off-roading in your Journey, you may get your cat broken because of the problems with ride height. The cat converter is located quite low, so it can bump over some rock or any other obstacle on the road and you will have to replace it.

Please remember that broken cats don't cost even a fraction of what OEM cats cost when they are in good condition. Buying a catalytic converter is always a big risk for a buyer, so they tend to offer careful prices and see if you agree or not. But usually, you can find better prices if you just try and search for them.

What's the average scrap price of a Dodge Journey catalytic converter?

Here's the short answer: the average scrap price of your Journey cat converter is $120 to $300.

Bigger main cats will cost up to $300 while smaller pre-cats and small main cats will cost even less than $120 depending on their model and the serial number that you can find on them. But sometimes you can just get the offer of $50 or $60 for a cat. Why?

First of all, prices may vary according to the current situation on the market. And also, the scrap catalytic converter prices are different in various businesses. One company may offer $300 for a big cat from the Journey while some other business will want to buy it for $60. And it's all up to you - you can choose between these businesses.

Here's what influences the price of the cat converter:

  • current prices for rhodium, palladium, and platinum - these metals are the most important for the cat converter recycling business;
  • prices for scrap cats on the market - they may go up and down depending on the number of available cats for sale;
  • government regulations - new taxes, higher rent prices, and a worse business environment will lead to lower prices for cats because of higher expenses on the recycling process;
  • the condition of your cat from a Dodge Journey, this is an individual factor but it's still important for sellers;
  • the way of selling a cat and the place where you are selling it - this is basically the only factor that you can fully control.

So, the price of a Dodge Journey catalytic converter totally depends on these factors and may change every week and even every day. There was a time when rhodium was highly demanded and it cost ten times more than palladium. This led to higher prices for Dodge and Chrysler cats that traditionally use quite a lot of rhodium - up to 2 grams in one scrap converter.

But sometimes, prices just go down because there is no demand for metals and the process of recycling catalytic converters becomes too expensive and complicated. You can't do anything with that. Someone even prefers to put the cat converter aside and wait for a month or two to get a better price.

How can you sell a catalytic converter from a Dodge Journey?

It's not hard to sell a used cat. But Americans usually use bad options for this. What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you are thinking of selling an old catalytic converter? We are sure it's a scrapyard. This is a bad way along with car mechanics, exhaust shops, private buyers, middlemen, eBay guys, and all other methods that don't give you a lot of money.

You can try recycling companies. Why? Because all catalytic converters in America eventually go to recycling companies. But in most cases, they go through a lot of hands and a lot of middlemen try to earn reselling them. Why don't you just get all the money for yourself?

Here's how you can do it:

  1. Take pictures. This is important. After you take the cat converter off your Dodge Journey, take pictures showing the serial number, the logo, and also any damage the cat may have.
  2. Find recycling companies. In the next step, you will need to go online and find at least three companies with proper websites that offer to quote online.
  3. Quote. Send your pictures to these companies and also give all the details about your vehicle they will ask for. This will take you a couple of minutes.
  4. Get offers. Wait until all the companies answer you back and offer a certain price for your Dodge Journey catalytic converter. Once you have all the offers, just compare them.
  5. Choose the offer. Just choose the company that pays for the shipping and offers the best price.

This is a simple and quick method to sell your catalytic converter directly to the company that recycles these parts. All recycling companies in the US work officially and guarantee that the process of recycling will not harm the environment. This is also important.

So, you will get more money and you will make sure that the cat is not just thrown away after all precious metals are out. By the way, by comparing the price offers, you just make sure that you have the best possible price for your converter.

Should you replace the cat converter after it fails?

The only phrase will answer this question: the annual emission inspection. Or better say fog test. First of all, your vehicle will not pass the fog test unless it has a proper catalytic converter. Even some aftermarket cats don't allow passing the fog test easily.

Also, "feds" will physically control if the catalytic converter is there under your Dodge Journey. If it's absent, you will not pass the emission control and will not be able to use your vehicle until you repair it.

So, we recommend finding any possibility to install a cat converter instead of your old one. It may be a used converter (not recommended), an aftermarket cat (choose between more expensive ones), or OEM new converter (the best decision that will cost you a fortune).

Final words

Once the OEM catalytic converter in your Dodge Journey is out of order, you can sell it. Don't lose your money and always choose the opportunity to sell your catalytic converter at a higher price. We've made a small instruction on how you can do that.

Also, remember that you can't pass the annual emission control without the properly installed cat converter. So, you will have to find a way to replace your old malfunctioning cat with a new one.
