EV Charger Red Light – What's This and How to Quickly Fix?

EV chargers are equipped with diagnostic modules and they won't work when something is wrong with the electrical connection, voltage, network parameters, or whatever. The most common thing that you may see in this case is the flashing or illuminating red light on the EV charger. When this happens, you will not be able to charge your vehicle - the charging process won't start unless the light is of green color.

So, why can you see an EV charger flashing a red light?

  • Voltage problems. Your home electricity network may have problems because of issues on the supplier's side.
  • Weak or unstable supply. This may happen when the weather is extreme, there are strong winds or snowfalls.
  • Issues with home electrical equipment. Your circuit breaker may be malfunctioning. Or maybe some other unit is having a glitch.
  • Something else is draining the power. Maybe, the charger can't get enough power because several other powerful units are connected to the network in your house.
  • The charger is broken or glitchy. Lastly, there is a chance that the charger is not feeling well and needs some help.

What should you do if you see the red light on the EV charger?

Whenever you see the red light flashing or illuminating on the charger, do the following:

  • Avoid connecting your charging cables to it or disconnect the cable immediately to avoid car battery damage.
  • If your charger has a reset button on it, press and hold the button to reset the system. Also, you may check the user's manual to learn more about resetting.
  • If the equipment doesn't have a reset button, turn off the circuit breaker to cut the power for the charger for several minutes.
  • After you turn the circuit breaker on, check if the green light illuminates on the charger.
  • If it's green, you may charge your car, there is nothing to worry about.
  • If it's still red, you may need professional help. Call the company that installed the charger for you and they will recommend the best way to service the equipment.

Can I fix the broken EV charger on my own?

This is the common question and I should disappoint you a little. It's not the best idea to dig into the charger unless you are a good electrician and know what you are doing. All you can do is reset the charger by cutting power for several minutes. If this doesn't help, call a technician for help.

It's not going to cost you a fortune to have a person look at it and diagnose the problem. In terms of repair prices, they may vary in accordance with the model and power of your EV charger. If it's still under the warranty, the repair may be free.
