Ford vans have been quite popular in America. These vehicles are usually used for small businesses but a lot of private owners also prefer big vehicles for their families. The key features of the Ford E250 Van are as follows: practical vehicle with good and reliable engines, optimal suspension, great interior quality, and other important advantages.
The Ford E250 has been here with us since 1961 - for over 50 years it has been carrying people and loads. Of course, the first generations are now hard to see on the roads. In 2014, the van was discontinued. But you can still buy cool fourth-generation vans used. Today, we'll be talking about the scrap price of the Ford E250 catalytic converter. Can you sell this thing for decent money?
We'll tell you about the following:
- What types of converters does the E250 use?
- What's the location of cat converters in a Ford van?
- What are the average prices of catalytic converters when they are broken?
- How can you sell a Ford E250 catalytic converter?
- Choosing a better price offer for the converter.
Let's get started!
Ford E250 - where are the cat converters located?
The location of the cats in these vehicles is standard. They are usually placed under the vehicle - right before the muffler. Different generations and engines have different types of catalytic converter assembly. The assembly may contain two, three, or four cars. Sometimes, the system includes two pre-cats and two main cats while in other cases, it may include three main cat converters.
The type of system you have in your Ford E250 is important because this will affect the price pretty much. Also, the E250 Van may have bread-loaf catalytic converters or torpedo ones. This will also change the price.
Here are some important things you should know:
- your main target is an OEM catalytic converter, but not an aftermarket one;
- only original Ford cats can be worth some money after they are broken;
- on any OEM Ford cat you will see a serial number and the Ford logo;
- the cats are usually heavy and they are quite big;
- the cats should only be in good condition (though they may have some rust on them, of course);
- the main idea is that the ceramic honeycomb inside a catalytic converter should always be unharmed.
These are the main factors you should know about the Ford E250 catalytic converters. If you are sure you have original cats in your possession, the best thing is to learn how to sell them at a good price. Unfortunately, not all buyers can offer you good prices. A lot of them will just want to make more money with your cat converter.
The original catalytic converters made by Ford contain platinum, palladium, and also some rhodium. These are the metals that many recycling companies are hunting for and are ready to pay for. That's why you shouldn't take any quick decisions when you are trying to sell one of such cats.
What's the scrap price of an E250 cat converter?
We would say that an average torpedo converter from your Ford E250 should cost about $250 when it's broken but still looks good.
Also, a bread-loaf converter will cost about $150. This one contains less precious materials and it's a little harder to recycle.
These prices are just average. You can get a bad price offer of $50 or something. And you can get a wonderful opportunity to sell the catalytic converter for $320 or even more. We would compare all prices and offers with the average figures.
Please remember that the price of the cat may change every day. And now, we are talking about the current prices that are possible at the moment when we are preparing this article.
The prices may vary because of these factors:
- sharp changes in the market of precious metals - sometimes it's one of the most important factors;
- the sharp growth of demand for special kinds of metals that are found in your E250 catalytic converter;
- the condition of your converter - old and shabby cats are always bought with a large discount only;
- the shipping options - you may find a company that pays for shipping and you will get more money;
- the number of cats available for recycling companies - the more cats are on sale, the less money buyers will offer.
Also, the prices may change because of the buyer you choose for selling your cat converter. We mean that you can choose between different buyers and middlemen to sell your cat to and this choice will define whether you will get a lot of money for your converter or not. This is important, so we'll pay more attention to it.
One important thing to remember is that selling your cat much cheaper than the average price we've given above is not a good idea. If a buyer offers you less than $250 for a torpedo cat and less than $150 for a bread-loaf cat converter from your Ford E250, you should find some other buyers.
Who can buy your cat converter from the Ford E250?
People and companies can buy catalytic converters with different goals. But the most common goal is to recycle those cat converters and to get much more money after selling the precious metals that can be extracted from the cat.
Middlemen will want to earn money in a different way - they will need to buy the cat cheaper and then resell it to the next buyer at a better price. Usually, middlemen resell the cats to recycling companies.
So, you can choose between different buyers:
- car mechanics
- exhaust shops;
- scrapyards;
- private buyers;
- recycling companies;
- other buyers.
You can sell your cat converter from the Ford E250 with the help of eBay or just sell it to a friend of yours who will then find some other ways of reselling the cat.
We wouldn't recommend selling cat converters to a scrapyard in your area because these companies will only offer you about half of the real price of the converter. Also, scrapyards will often try to reduce the price once they see the cat.
We would only go to recycling companies. They offer better prices and they are actually the final destination of all scrap converters from Ford E250 and all other cars.
How to sell your cat to a recycling company?
We know for sure that the majority of recycling companies in the US will be glad to offer you a good price for a torpedo cat converter made by Ford or for any other original Ford cat. They are hunting for these converters and are ready to offer you free shipping, good prices, quick services, etc.
Any recycling company will want to know what kind of converter they are going to buy from you. For example, they can ask you to show pictures of your cat converter where they can see the serial number. You should take such pictures before you quote.
Here's how you can sell an E250 converter to a recycling company:
- Take the converter off your car first and then look at the condition of the unit.
- Try to take pictures that would show the serial number and some other features.
- Find at least 3 or 4 companies that have decent websites and are specialized in buying out cat converters.
- Quote. Just send them applications with the pictures of your cat.
- Wait for their responses - you will have to wait one or two days, usually.
- Compare the offers - usually, the price offers are pretty similar, but sometimes a certain company may surprise you.
- Choose the company you want to sell your cat to and learn about shipping options.
Then, all you have to do is to organize shipping. You will not need to spend a lot of time on this. The whole procedure of quoting will take you 1 or 2 hours. After this, you'll have to wait for some time before they offer you a certain price.
Very often, people don't want to sell a cat converter to a recycling company because it seems too hard and complicated. But it's even harder to go to a scrapyard and spend your time and petrol on the road.
So, we would choose to sell a Ford E250 cat converter to a recycling company. This will save you some time and give you a much better price than anyone else can offer.
Final words
One of the good ideas is not hurrying up when you need to sell an old cat converter that you have taken from the Ford E250. You should check different ways to sell your cat. But we can predict that the best offer you will get will still come from a recycling company.
Never sell your cat to a reseller who just wants to get some money by selling it immediately to another company. Just get all the money you can get from this thing.
