Cyclone Engine Specifications

Your truck will need an engine that can deliver phenomenal performance efficiently. Let's see whether the 3.3L V6 engine is up to the task.

  • Engine Type

The 3.3L V6 engine is a longitudinal naturally aspirated engine exhibiting a V configuration. It has six cylinders. It operates on direct fuel injection and Ford port-fuel system to make the most out of every drop of fuel delivered to the engine's combustion chamber. The fuel system also makes 3.3L V6 the most economical engine option for your truck.

It operates on a DOHC (dual overhead camshaft) and twin-independent VCT (variable camshaft timing) setup. The mechanical settings boost the engine's power output.

The engine supports both 4x2 and 4x4 drive trains.

  • Build

Ford used aluminum to make the engine's block and its cylinder heads. The motor comes with a 3.3 Liter displacement. Its bore width is 90.42 millimeters, while its stroke height is 86.1 millimeters. The engine has a compression ratio of 12.0:1. The compression ratio gives it a higher combustion efficiency. It will yield more power but burn less fuel.

The engine uses a timing chain instead of a belt.

  • Horsepower and Torque

When you turn your key and put your foot on the gas pedal, the torque and horsepower coming from the engine will dictate whether the truck will have an efficient, great, and fruitful day.

The twisting force and power generated by the engine determine whether your truck will maneuver through steep grades or haul heavy objects. The twisting force will keep turning your wheels, while power will fasten the turns. Therefore, they are the most vital metrics you should focus on when shopping for a new engine.

Also, it's advisable to have a harmonious torque and horsepower combination. It will affect the car's drivability and handling. The 2022 Ford F-150 3.3L V6 Engine has an unparalleled combination of torque and horsepower. It delivers a torque of 265 pound-feet at 4,000 rpm (revolution per minute) and 290 hp at 6,500 rpm. The torque and horsepower blend gives it a responsive performance. The engine will deliver just enough rotational strength and power to push, pull, and move the truck's weight.

The motor will handle your daily demands flawlessly thanks to its drive mode, optimized power, and hauling capacity.

  • Gas Mileage

An engine's fuel economy has a notable impact on your pocket. You'll spend lots of money on gas or fuel if you mistakenly buy a power source with poor fuel economy. Therefore, always choose an option that offers the best fuel economy.

According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), the 3.3L V6 engine with a 4x2 drive train option will give you 19 mpg while cruising on a city road. It will exhibit a 25 mpg gas mileage while driving through the highway. Its overall gas mileage is 22 mpg.

The 4x4 drive train option will give you 18 mpg on a city road and 23 mpg on the highway because it requires more power than the 4x2 option. Its overall gas mileage is 20 mpg.

  • Towing and Payload Capacity

You'll get an 8,200-pound maximum towing capacity with the engine. The payload capacity will be 1,990 lbs.

Engine's Life Span

The longevity of your engine largely depends on how you treat and service it.

When everything is held constant, the engine can comfortably survive up to 300,000 miles before it starts presenting dire engine problems. However, its life span may be slightly lower than 300,000 miles due to other factors that could affect your engine. It may survive 260,000 miles without needing a replacement.

You get an affordable engine with a lengthy lifespan and incredible fuel efficiency.

Is It Reliable?

The 3.3L V6 Cyclone engine is the most affordable option for your 2022 Ford F-150. The motor will comfortably handle your daily demands without frequent breakdowns. The engine's fuel systems make it have an outstanding fuel efficiency level.

It exhibits impressive gas mileage. Hence, great for your pocket. It has a variable camshaft timing setup that optimizes every fuel drop delivered to the engine. Therefore, boosting the engine's power output. So, you get enough power without spending too much on gas. It will also give your car more stability.

The engine also demonstrates incredible responsiveness, making it a highway-worthy power source. Its responsiveness makes it an easy task to haul cargo on any terrain.

Generally, it's a good engine.

Common Problems the Engine Exhibits

We can affirm that the 3.3L V6 is a reliable engine.

However, we've seen several complaints concerning the 3.3L V6 engine. Here are a few issues you may have to deal with if you pick the 3.3L V6 engine for your truck.

  • Limited Towing Capacity

A driver should never ignore an engine's maximum towing capacity when shopping for a new one. The figures listed may limit or optimize your daily demands.

The 3.3L V6 engine option offers a maximum of 8,200 pounds towing capacity. Your mid-sized pickup will need an engine that can tow more than 8,200 pounds. Other 2022 Ford F-150 engine options offer better towing capacity than the 3.3L V6 option.

The 3.3L V6 engine may not be the best pick if your mid-size will do lots of heavy towing daily since it has the most unfavorable towing capacity. You may end up straining your engine, brakes, tires, transmission, and chassis with a limited towing capacity.

Moreover, your brakes are vital during emergencies.

  • Poorly Constructed Head Gasket

You might encounter unexpected oil and fluid leaks in your engine. While head gasket leaks often start as a minute problem for the 3.3L V6 engine, it is catastrophic for your motor and truck.

The head gasket leaks occur due to construction issues. Many drivers claim to notice oil leaks that cause oil to spill on the car's starter. The leaks emerge from the head gasket on the passenger side. Once it starts leaking, it seeps into the starter leaving oil stains each time you park your truck. Also, when the gasket starts leaking due to its flaws, it spills into the exhaust. Hence, causing an unusual odor.

Owners also report experiencing sudden transmission leaks. They mostly notice the issue when their cars experience quick transmission changes, car jerks, or brisk accelerations.

  • 10-Speed Transmission Issues

The 2022 3.3L V6 engine also comes with a 10-speed transmission. Ford's 10-speed transmission technology has raised lots of controversies and legal issues. It's both good and bad for the F-150 engines.

Drivers report that the 10-speed transmission causes erratic gear switches. The switches may also manifest as violent jerks. Although the 10-speed transmission makes the engine more efficient, it causes a flawed gear shifting as you drive your car. You'll likely encounter gear slips, violent jerks, sudden acceleration, rough shifting, or hesitation issues. You may also experience a power loss.

The gears may also intermittently lock. In this scenario, your gears will lock, losing the ability to shift. Drivers who had gone through this issue had to park their cars for a few hours to solve the intermittent locking.

Although Ford claimed to have solved the harsh shifting in 2018, the previous and current 3.3L V6 engines still experience gear issues. You'll have to pay attention to how your truck shifts its gears if you decide to go with the 3.3L V6 engine. Apart from harsh shifts and jerks, pay attention to noises when shifting gears. Owners report hearing loud bangs when shifting gears. At times the transmission puts out a loud clunk when a driver shifts from park to driving which is out of the norm.

In 2021, Ford recalled close to fifty thousand trucks due to unplanned gear shifting.

A Wrap

Ford did an incredible job with the F-150 3.3L V6 Cyclone engine. The company heard its consumers and produced a cost-effective motor. It's dependable and has a lengthy lifespan. It also has an enviable fuel efficiency compared to other options compatible with your 2022 Ford F-150. The motor will also give you a perfect horsepower-torque combination. But you can always give it a boost by tuning it.

The company is working towards fixing the transmission issue. Fortunately, you can take your car to a trusted dealer for a reset. The reset will solve all the shifting troubles linked to the 10-speed transmission. The transmission and head gasket issues should cause you to overlook the 3.3L V6 engine. You'll be astonished at what the supposedly small power source can do for your truck.
