Ford Focus Catalytic Converter Scrap Price. Ready To Earn On Scrap Parts?

The Focus is one of the most popular models of the Ford Company. This is a family sedan that is available in terms of price and is relatively reliable. So, people buy this car a lot. Up to 200 000 cars are sold every year in the USA alone. It means, that over 500 people buy their new Ford Focus in America every single day.

We can imagine that a lot of people are interested in the price of the catalytic converter in this car. Especially if they have already replaced the malfunctioning cat and now have the big original Ford Focus converter in their hands. Both, the 1.0-liter EcoBoost engine and the 2.0-liter FlexFuel engine have quite big and valuable converters. Let alone the 2.3 engine from the ST version.

Here's what we are going to talk about today:

  1. What kinds of converters are installed in Ford Focus?
  2. What is the scrap price of the Focus catalytic converter?
  3. How much money can recycling companies make with your converter?
  4. Can you sell your Ford Focus cat converter at a better price?

Let's get started!

What kind of a converter do you have in your Ford Focus?

We know about the three most popular engines in the modern Ford Focus (the third generation): 1-liter turbocharged EcoBoost engine, 2-liter FlexFuel engine (the most popular), and also 2.3-liter turbocharged engine for the crazy ST version. These all engines have different types of catalytic converters that will apparently have different scrap prices.

Regarding the 2-generation Focus, we would say that most vehicles had 2-liter engines with just simple and average converters that cost now around $70. The third-gen Focus cats will cost from $50 to $200 depending on the engine model and also on some other important factors.

Please, bear in mind that we are only talking about the OEM (it means original) converters made by Ford. All kinds of aftermarket converters don't cost that much. They will usually be bought for around $10 or something. Sometimes, it's hard to distinguish between an original Ford converter and an aftermarket part. So, we'll pay attention to it.

How to understand that you have an original Ford converter?

All OEM converters made by Ford come as an integral part of the exhaust system of your vehicle. Also, they have some important marks that will help you see that the converter is original. But sometimes, they will be rusty and you will not be able to distinguish them. In this case, you should consult a specialist and have his or her opinion.

Here are some important things that prove that the cat is OEM:

  • it's a heavy and relatively big part (but in the 1-liter EcoBoost the cat is not that big);
  • on one side of the converter you can find a Ford logo and a serial number of the cat;
  • the catalytic converter is not welded, it comes as a part of an exhaust pipe;
  • it doesn't rattle when you shake it - it's solid and has the ceramic honeycomb inside.

By the way, the ceramic honeycomb or filter that is placed inside the cat is the most important part. If it's damaged or absent, no one will pay you a lot of money for the cat. All catalytic converters that are bought for recycling are checked thoroughly.

What's the scrap price of a Ford Focus cat converter?

So, let's talk about the most important thing. We suppose that the scrap price of a Ford Focus catalytic converter should be between $50 and $200. It depends much on the engine model, year, and condition of your converter. It's important to know what can change the price of your catalytic converter to understand all possible problems.

You may wonder why one converter will cost only $50 while some others can be bought for $150 and even sometimes more. The answer is not that simple. We've prepared a list of important factors that will determine the final price of your scrap catalytic converter.

Here are the most important factors:

  1. Origin. Some aftermarket cats just don't cost anything. You should have an OEM converter to even try to sell it.
  2. Size. The bigger the converter, the more money you can get. Bigger cat converters include more precious metals.
  3. Year. Some old converters are destroyed and don't have the precious ceramic filter with all the precious metals inside. So buyers will not pay a lot of money for an old converter.
  4. Condition. If the converter body has some holes and other damages, the price of the converter drops sharply. No one will want to buy a damaged cat at full price.
  5. Extra factors. For example, the scrap price for your old catalytic converter will depend much on the price of platinum, palladium, and also rhodium.

As you see, a lot of factors determine the actual price of your cat converter. The most important factor is the type of the engine. The tiny converters from the 1-liter EcoBoost engines are not as good when you sell them. They are small, and light and they don't contain a lot of precious metals.

We know one more important factor - the buyer. If you sell your cat converter to a scrapyard near you, you will probably get a quarter of the full price. If we say that the average price of the cat converter taken from your Ford Focus is around $100, we don't say that everyone will be ready to give that much for your old cat.

How much will the recycling companies earn?

A Ford Focus catalytic converter is not a very valuable cat. We know some converters that cost over a thousand dollars even if they are old and ugly. But still, you may wonder why someone would pay up to $200 for a piece of rusty scrap metal. The thing is that this converter contains platinum, palladium, and rhodium. The price of these scrap metals is from $35 to $650 per 1 gram.

A Ford Focus catalytic converter may contain 3 to 5 grams of platinum, 2 to 4 grams of palladium, and also around 1 gram of rhodium. After selling all these precious metals, a recycling company may get $800 to $1100 depending on the cat converter type and market prices for precious metals.

But not all the money is the company's revenue. A lot of money comes from taxes, salaries, technologies, and recycling procedures. We would say, a recycling company makes around $200-$300 from one catalytic converter.

How to sell the Ford Focus catalytic converter?

You can find some ways to sell your old catalytic converter. Some of them will be more lucrative while others will be just fast. The fastest ways we know are to sell the cat converter to a mechanic who does all the work for installing the new cat converter and also to sell the cat to a scrapyard in your town or city. These are also the cheapest ways.

Then, you can try to find a middleman in your place. These guys will pay you more money, but still not that much. The best price you will get with a direct sale through some websites like eBay, but you will need to wait for a month until your client finds your ad.

Then, we have the best option - selling your Ford Focus cat to a recycling company. Here's what you should do for this:

  1. Find as many companies online as you can. These should be their websites with the opportunity to inquire about the price for your converter.
  2. Take pictures of the converter so that they could check the part and understand that it's actually an OEM cat.
  3. Quote at each website and attach pictures of the converter to every message.
  4. Wait for them to answer. This may take one or two working days to get the answers from all the companies.
  5. Then you just should choose the best option you have. In most cases, this will be a really good offer.
  6. After that contact the company you chose once again and ask their manager what should you do next.

This is the easiest and sometimes even the fastest way to sell your converter. And it offers much more money than you can get from a scrapyard or from your mechanic. These companies always offer good prices because they know that you will probably inquire about numerous companies and will know the average price. And they really want to get your converter.

Final words

It's not that hard to sell a Ford Focus catalytic converter. For this, you will only need to know the average price and choose the way you want to sell your cat. We recommend you sell the converter to a recycling company. Because, in the end, this cat will get to a recycling company anyway. But you may just lose your money if you sell it to a middleman or some company that just wants to earn money on your cat.
