Ford Taurus cat converter scrap price

Here's what we are going to talk about:

  1. Ford Taurus and its cat converters - where are they located?
  2. How much is the scrap price of a Ford Taurus catalytic converter?
  3. What are the easiest ways to sell a converter at a decent price?
  4. Should you install a new converter instead of the old one?

Let's get started!

Where is the catalytic converter located in your Ford Taurus?

Your Taurus may be equipped with different kinds of engines. Ford example, 3.5 Duratec, 3.0 V6, 3.5 EcoBoost, 2.7 EcoBoost, 2.0 EcoBoost, and many others. Depending on the engine that powers your vehicle, it may have different types of catalytic converters.

But still, many Ford vehicles have the same structure of the exhaust gas emission system. First of all, pre-cats are used in most cars after 2010, while some earlier vehicles will not have any pre-cat. Main catalytic converters are usually alone in the system, only some rare versions could have two of them in one car.

Here are some facts you should know about the Taurus cats:

  • the pre-cats, if they are presented in your vehicle, are placed right near the exhaust manifold, they are small and not very valuable;
  • each exhaust manifold usually has one catalytic converter, so V6 engines have two of them, while L4 engines will only have one pre-cat;
  • also, the main converter is placed under your vehicle, near the muffler, it's often wrapped in the heat resistant screen to protect against overheating;
  • original (OEM) converters are needed for a good sale, aftermarket cats are not valuable at all, so keep it in mind;
  • an average Ford Taurus catalytic converter is able to survive about 150,000 miles or over 12 years which is a lot for a cat, actually;
  • catalytic converter replacement is not a cheap thing, especially if you want to install an OEM converter in your vehicle.

So, now you know that a Ford Taurus may have one or several catalytic converters depending on its engine and model year. Anyway, to make good money, you will need to find the OEM main converter in your vehicle. Pre-cats can also be sold, but the prices won't affect your budget much.

Main aftermarket cats are sold for $30 approximately in your local scrapyard, no need to send them to recycling companies because this will only lead to additional expenses for shipping. To see if you have an OEM converter, look for its serial number and let a specialist look at it to identify the cat.

How much should a Taurus scrap catalytic converter cost?

If you want to know the price, you shouldn't listen to anyone including us. The thing is that the prices may change every day. So, as of the end of July 2022, the main catalytic converter from your Ford Taurus should cost approximately $180-$220 after it's clogged and unable to be used for cleaning exhaust gases anymore.

But this average price may change and it may go to both sides. We've seen a situation when the average price of a scrap catalytic converter changed to 30-40% just in one month. So, what should you do and what exactly changes the price of an old catalytic converter?

Let's see:

  • Precious metal prices. The market is changing and some metals may cost a lot today while they were not demanded yesterday. Platinum, palladium, and rhodium are three metals to consider.
  • Year and type of the converter. Of course, this may change the price sharply because some cats don't have a lot of precious metals inside while others do.
  • The condition of the catalytic converter. This is another important factor that may change the price. Rusty and holed cats are not sold at a good price, it's very risky to buy them.
  • The way you are selling these converters. You may sell it to your neighbor for a couple of beer cans or you can find a more lucrative way and get some money for your cat from a specialized company.

So, if you look at it like this, you see that some factors influence the cost of your scrap converter. but three of these important factors are not under your control. You can't change the market price of platinum or the condition of your cat. But you can find a person or a company that buys out catalytic converters at the best prices.

And this is how you can get more money for a Ford Taurus catalytic converter. The easiest thing to do is to just inquire in different companies about the price they are ready to pay for your cat. This is the best method to understand the average price and to see if you agree to sell this scrap part for that amount of money or not.

How to sell a cat converter to a certain company?

You may have heard that not all states legally allow to sell catalytic converters (and also other things containing precious metals) for cash, so some states regulate this sphere more strictly than others. But whatever state you live in, you always have the opportunity to sell a cat at a good price.

We believe you should forget about different middlemen, scrapyards, neighbors, eBay opportunities, exhaust shops, and private specialists. They will only offer you about half of the real price. Why? Because they just want to resell the cat and earn some money.

Here's how you can earn all this money by yourself:

  • take the catalytic converter from your Ford Taurus and make sure it's OEM;
  • take some pictures of the cat to show them to those who may be interested;
  • find some recycling companies online that buy out catalytic converters (we mean websites);
  • use these websites to send the pictures of your converter and also to inquire about the price;
  • after some time (usually, one day), these companies will send their offers;
  • you can compare prices now, learn the average price, and choose the best option.

Sounds easy, right? And it is actually easy to do. Even if you want to sell your converter on eBay, we still recommend using this simple technique and finding out the average price of cat converters for Ford Taurus. This way, you will not lose your money and, in most cases, you'll be able to sell the converter at the best price right there and then.

As far as we know, no other companies are going to offer you more money than recycling companies.

Should you replace an old catalytic converter in your Ford Taurus?

The first thought of a Taurus owner when they understand the cat converter is clogged and not going to work anymore is deleting. To delete a catalytic converter, you will need a cutting instrument and also welding equipment or just a good exhaust mechanic. But unfortunately, it's not legal in most states.

Most areas will have this law for checking up your vehicle yearly in terms of emissions. It's usually called a fog test. Without a catalytic converter, your car will not even be checked because specialists will deny it right after they look at the exhaust system. They usually physically check the presence of the cat converter.

So, you should install at least some catalytic converter in your Ford Taurus and hope that it will be normal for passing the fog test.

You basically have three choices:

  • New OEM converter which will cost you an arm and a leg. It's over $1,500 for a cat and plus $200 or more for labor.
  • Used OEM cat is another option. You can buy it in an exhaust shop or on eBay and it will be much cheaper than the new one. But it can be broken, clogged, or about to die.
  • New aftermarket converter. This is an optimal choice if you buy a decent cat. In our opinion, it should cost about $500.

Final words

We perfectly know that the catalytic converter in your Ford Taurus is going to malfunction sooner or later. These cars are pretty old now (if you have one of those popular old Taurus models) and their originally installed cats are too old to function properly. So, now you know how to sell your old cat so that the purchase of the new one wasn't too expensive for you.
