The catalytic converter business is thriving throughout the United States. And big truck owners have won a lottery in this case. The scrap price of big catalytic converters keeps on growing and now you can get a decent sum of money if you are prepared to sell the scrap cat wisely. Unfortunately, there are many people who want to earn money using your cat converter, so you should be very careful.
Today, we'll be speaking about the Ford V10 engine. The company had basically one V10 engine in history. It was produced from 1997 and up until 2004. The majority of these engines were made between 1999 and 2003. They are legendary units that can boast wonderful longevity and unbelievable efficiency. These engines are marvelous in all spheres but the fuel consumption.
So, today, we'll talk about the following:
- Ford V10 engine main specs and applications.
- Catalytic converters for Ford V10 - how many are there and where are they?
- How much for a scrap catalytic converter from Ford V10?
- Who can buy your old cat paying you more money than average?
- The step-by-step instruction on how to sell the old catalytic converter.
Let's get started!
Ford V10 - quick facts about the legendary engine
The engine was primarily made for the F250 truck, but eventually, it was used in many vans and also in buses. A lot of RVs were built using these engines because the units were quite reliable, long-lasting, and problem-free. Well, at least, these engines could go a lot of miles without major problems.
Among the most problematic cases, we can think of blown head bolt thread, blown spark plugs thread, oil consumption, and also typical high-mileage problems like worn valve seals and piston rings. But in general, the engine was pretty good in all terms.
Experts say that the V10 engine by Ford can go around 200 000 miles before it needs repairs like piston rings replacement, valves check and valve seals replacement. After that, it can go another 100 000 miles before the next set of repairs. This is a heavy-duty engine, so we know cases when these units made it up to 500 000 miles and then were replaced by new ones.
Ford V10 is a legend, but today they are not used much because of two reasons: ecology and economy. These engines can provide around 7 to 10 miles per gallon of gas mileage which is not good at all. Also, the ecological impact of the engines is not as low as you may want it to be. Also, the Ford V10 engines are quite old now and they need a lot of investments to keep going which is not always rational.
Ford V10 catalytic converters - where are they?
You can expect the Ford V10 engine to have at least two catalytic converters because the engine is quite big and it has two nearly separate parts featuring 5 cylinders each. But Ford decided to save up some money and they made only one catalytic converter. Though, it's pretty big and expensive.
The converter is placed right before the muffler (between the muffler and the engine), it's very big and you will easily locate it if needed.
Here are some facts about the converter:
- it's a torpedo-like catalytic converter that is pretty big and heavy;
- you will need to cut it away, it's welded in the system;
- the new cat should also be welded which isn't very good for longevity;
- oxygen sensors are inserted right into the converter - don't damage them;
- there is no heat cover or something, just a simple sticker on the car body;
- the converter can survive over 150 000 miles which is longer than in many other cars.
This converter is quite expensive to replace. We've found the cheapest option for $700. Of course, this is not the original converter and you will never know if it's going to pass the fog test or not. More or less optimal aftermarket converters start at $1500, and the original one is hard to buy but it should cost at least $3000 if you manage to find one for sale.
But today we are going to tell you some good news, too.
What's the scrap price of your Ford V10 catalytic converter?
This Triton engine is known for having a very expensive catalytic converter. Unfortunately, this is the main reason why Ford F250 and many other trucks with this V10 engine very often suffer from cat converter theft. We believe you will not consider stealing anyone's converter because you will not be able to sell it at a good price without proving that it's your legal converter and it hasn't been stolen. Also, you will get to prison for that, so it isn't worth it for sure.
The scrap price of the Ford V10 catalytic converter is between $500 and $1200. You may wonder why the difference is so huge. Here's what the final price depends on:
- the condition of your catalytic converter - it should be looking nice if you want to sell it at a good price;
- the current price of the precious metals that you can get from the converter - palladium, platinum, and also rhodium;
- the demand on converters on the market - it can fluctuate from time to time, so the companies offer better or worse prices;
- the company you are selling your converter - to sell a scrap part for good money is pretty hard, but we'll show you how you can do it;
- the year of the converter - they were modified by the Ford company several times, so the year is important, too.
Now, you may wonder how you can predict the price of the converter. Look at it. Does it have a lot of rust and some holes in its metal cover? It's going to be cheaper than you would want it to be. Does the honeycomb inside the converter look nice or melted? If it looks melted or destroyed, you will not get a lot of money for such a converter.
The price is determined by the weight of the precious metals that the company can take out of the converter. And in the case of the Ford V10 engine, it's not that bad. They can get over 2 grams of rhodium ($650 per 1 gram), over 10 grams of platinum ($45 per 1 gram), and over 7 grams of palladium ($75 per 1 gram). The prices are approximate and they can change every hour.
Who can buy your catalytic converter?
- Private buyers. You will find some people on eBay who want to buy the converters and mine some precious metals. But the downside is obvious - you will spend months before you sell the cat.
- Middlemen. These guys are ready to come to you, to offer you some money right on the spot. They are easy to deal with and this is the advantage. But they don't offer you big money, so you should try something else.
- Local scrapyards. These guys will offer you $100 or something like that. They don't know much about the converters, so they will just try to resell the cat and earn some money. A really bad option.
- Recycling companies. In the end, nearly all converters go to these companies because they offer the best prices. And you should start with them. We are pretty sure that these companies will give the best price offer.
How to sell the Ford V10 converter? Our guide
Selling the converter is not that hard. We don't recommend you to go to middlemen or choose a private selling option. Also, we hate the idea to sell the converter to scrapyards. Recycling companies could be the best choice if you do everything wisely.
To get the best price offer is not very easy, but we'll tell you what exactly you will need to do. The steps are pretty straightforward:
- Take off the cat converter. You will probably need professional help because the catalytic converter is integrated into the exhaust system in your Ford vehicle.
- Clean the dirt and some rust and find the place where you will see the serial number. Make sure that the number is easy to read.
- Take pictures of the converter. This will help you inquire in different companies about the potential price of the old converter.
- Find as many websites of the recycling companies that recycle specifically catalytic converters as you can. Then send pictures to these companies using their website functions.
- Wait for the offers. The companies will send you the approximate prices they are ready to pay for the converter.
The only thing you will need to do next is to choose the best offer and organize the shipping of your converter. Some companies will even send their workers to you so you will not need to pay for delivery.
Final words
If you have a converter that you have taken off the Ford V10 engine, you should know that this is a pretty precious thing. And many companies are ready to pay more than $500 and even sometimes over $1200 for your converter. Be careful when you choose the company for selling the old cat - check the reviews and ratings before you agree to sell the cat. Don't lose your money - choose the best and the most profitable ways to sell the converter.
