Grinding Noise From Starter – What’s Happening?

When you hear grinding noise from under the hood, stop any attempts to start the car because you may cause big troubles. The obvious reason for this is that starter gear doesn't fit with the engine flywheel gear. Originally, they have to fit with each other in certain position and then the starter can rotate the engine and ensure that it starts. We discuss the major starter problems here and give advice about the grinding noise.

Grinding occurs when metal part contact with each other in the way that is not considered correct. This leads to a very fast wear of the metal parts. Usually, the starter gear will be worn out quickly and the part known to be called starter bendix will need to be changed. But sometimes the engine flywheel starts wearing out quicklier. This causes bigger problems for car owner.

Sometimes the problem is connected with a certain relay of the starter that is in charge of moving the gear aside when the engine is on. If the gear stays at the same position, the flywheel of the engine will rotate the starter and will destroy it quite quickly.

So if you hear a grinding noise from the starter, you will need to check the car and better stop driving it until you deal with the problem.
