Honda ST1100 and ST1300 Problems – Any Fatal Issues?

The Honda ST is very popular because of its reliability as a sport-touring motorcycle. Owners have also praised these models for their easy maintenance. The success of the range is thanks to the ST1100 and its successor, the ST1300. The production of the former already ended in 2002 while the latter took a bow in 2013. Despite these, we can still see the bikes on the road up to this day. Such display alone is a testament to their quality and durability.

Now, before even thinking about buying one, you should be aware of their major issues first. Most importantly, the problems of the ST bikes that may prove to be fatal on your part.

Death Wobble

Death wobble is a common concern with the Honda ST line of motorcycles due to their age, and this can be aggravated by poor maintenance on the part of the owner. It is characterized by a sudden, violent shaking of the bike that makes it difficult to control. As its name morbidly hints, a death wobble can make you lose control of your bike increasing your risk of a fatal crash or collision.

A death wobble can be due to several factors, but the most common cause is uneven tire wear. The best way to fix the dreaded death wobble is to prevent it from happening in the first place. So, start by making sure that your tires are properly inflated and that they have enough tread.

If death wobble does occur, the best way to stop it is to slow down and pull over to the side of the road. Once you've stopped, inspect your tires to see if they are the cause of the problem. If they are, inflate them to their recommended pressure or replace them with new ones if they are already worn.

If your tires are not the cause of the problem, then it is likely that something else is causing the death wobble such as misalignment of the wheels or suspension-related problems. In this case, you'll need to take your bike to a qualified mechanic for further diagnosis, adjustment, and/or repair. Death wobble can be a serious problem, but it is usually easy to fix if you catch it early.

There are mods to further improve the handling and cornering ability of your ST if you want to prevent the occurrence of this issue in the long run. This can be done by making modifications to the suspension system of your motorcycle via the installation of stiffer springs and shocks, as well as upgrading the front forks to larger-diameter ones. Underpowered

For a sports touring model, many find the Honda ST to be underpowered. The problem by itself is not deadly but it may turn fatal if you fail to get enough distance from another vehicle when you are overtaking on the highway.

In a nutshell, the 1,085cc engine of the ST1100 is already capable of producing 100 hp at 8,500 rpm and 79 lb-ft of torque at 6,000. Its peak output is pretty decent but looking at the numbers, it takes too long for the bike to reach them. Another contributory factor to its seemingly underwhelming acceleration according to users is its wet weight going up to 721 lbs.

Honda took the notch up a little with the ST1300. Thanks to the higher displacement of the model with 1,261cc and some improvements to the engine design, the output was raised to 117 hp at 8,000 rpm and 86 lb-ft at 6,500 rpm. Together with it was the overall wet weight of the motorcycle climbing to 730 lbs. on the scale though. Again, this didn't sit well with some users.

Now, this is the standard design of the motorcycles so the only way around the issue is through power modifications on the ST. One of the most effective ways to improve the performance of your Honda ST motorcycle is by modifying the air intake system. This can be done by installing a high-flow air filter, which will allow more air to enter the engine for better combustion. Additionally, you can also install an aftermarket cold air intake system, which will bring enhanced airflow into the engine.

Another area where you can make upgrades to improve the performance of your bike is the exhaust system. By installing a high-flow exhaust system, you will let the engine breathe better and expel spent gases more effectively. This will result in more power and torque being produced by the engine, as well as an increase in fuel efficiency.

Modifying the ECU of your Honda ST motorcycle can also greatly improve its performance. By tuning the ECU, you can change the fuel map and ignition timing, which can lead to more power and torque being produced by the engine. Additionally, you can install an aftermarket exhaust gas temperature sensor, which will further improve the performance of the engine.

Weight Issue

Having a heavy frame means only a small window of opportunity for you to dodge or steer clear of any sudden obstructions in your path. Weight can also contribute to the premature wear and tear of your tires and suspension, which can be fatal if any of them suddenly gives in to your body and bike's combined weight while riding in traffic.

As mentioned in the previous item, the Honda ST1100 weighs 721 lbs. and the ST1300 tips the scale at 730 lbs. Again, these are their factory designs, so the only way around them would be some weight reduction measures via mods.

One of the best ways to reduce the weight of your Honda ST motorcycle is by installing aftermarket exhaust systems. Aftermarket exhausts are typically much lighter than stock exhausts and can help you shed a few pounds from your bike.

Another way to reduce weight is by installing lighter wheels. Wheels made from materials like carbon fiber or aluminum are much lighter than stock wheels and can help improve your bike's performance.

Moreover, you can install lightweight body panels on your Honda ST. Body panels made from lightweight materials like carbon fiber or Kevlar can help you shed even more weight from your bike, and can also improve its looks.

For a good measure, you may combine these with some of the performance mods mentioned earlier to compensate for the heavy weight of your Honda ST. This way, you can reduce its weight while taking more horsepower and torque figures all at the same time.

  • Check the tire pressure regularly. Incorrect tire pressure can lead to premature tire wear and poor handling.
  • Clean your motorcycle regularly. A clean bike not only looks better but also runs better. Be sure to wash off any salt or road grime that can lead to corrosion.
  • Take it easy on the throttle. Sudden acceleration puts unnecessary stress on the engine and drivetrain, which can wear them down gradually.
  • Keep the air filters clean. Dirty air filters can restrict airflow and lead to engine problems.
  • Be sure to use the correct type of fuel. Using the wrong type of fuel can damage your motorcycle's engine.
  • Have the bike serviced regularly. A qualified technician should regularly inspect the bike for any potential problems and perform any necessary repairs before the issues get worse.

The death wobble only applies to the 1300, I’ve owned 5 ST 1100 and they are one of the most stable bikes made.
