How Fast Does A Honda Civic Go? Comparing With Best Counterparts

Honda Civic is one of the most popular cars out there. In 2015, experts counted that 18.5 million Civics had been sold around the world. Each year, up to 350 000 Civics are sold in the US only. This is an amazing number of cars. And yes, there are still people in the US who hate these vehicles for being cramped, not fast enough, or not beautiful in their opinion. But most of us love Civics.

Today, the 11th generation of the Civic is sold all over the world. And this car is totally amazing. You can choose between a hatchback and a sedan body, you can also go for a special version called Si for more sports in your life. But today we will not review this vehicle from scratch because a lot of our colleagues have already done it with passion.

We'll talk mainly about the following:

  1. How fast is the 11th generation of the Honda Civic?
  2. What engines do they offer in regular and Si trims?
  3. What is the top speed of the Civic?
  4. How can you make your Civic even faster?

Let's get started!

Some facts about the Civic and the speed

Today's generation of the Civic is the car that nearly everyone wants to have. This vehicle is beautiful, very technological, and extremely fast. Even the cheapest versions like LX that cost up to $25,000 are not so bad in terms of speed.

If you want to compare the Civic of different generations, we've prepared a special page where all the model years of the vehicle are gathered along with all main specs. We try hard to update the page once new generations arrive on the market.

So, here are some facts you should know about the 11th generation of the Civic:

  1. The Civic LX comes with a 2-liter engine with 158 horsepower. This is not the fastest engine in the world, but it ensures proper fuel consumption, great ecology, and wonderful longevity. This engine is coupled with a CVT transmission.
  2. The Civic EX and EX-L come with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with 180 horsepower. This engine is much faster, it rotates pretty fast and has wonderful torque.
  3. The Civic Si comes with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine offering 200 horsepower. This is the beast, even though it's so small. The torque is just magical, so the car will be fun to drive. Unfortunately, the price is not that affordable.

So, the Civic Si is something that should be considered in our article and is something that is interesting for us. But before we dive into the Si trim, let's look at other trims and opportunities.

So, you will have the opportunity to buy the EX at around $26,000, the Touring at about $30,000, and the Si at about $29,000. The Civic Touring with less powerful engines is more expensive than the Si. This can be explained by better comfort equipment in the Touring.

Buying a Civic is a hard thing in terms of deciding whether or not you need a top trim. The Si is a good choice, but it will not have the luxury equipment that the Touring has. Although, the Touring will have a less interesting engine under the hood. So, the choice is not obvious.

The Honda Civic Si - what's interesting?

The Si is one of the best Civics you can find if you want some sports. The company introduced a new engine with 200 horsepower for this model. Also, the company provides a wonderful stiff suspension and much better handling for active driving. The steering system is as sharp as a knife and you can put your vehicle in turns at higher speed.

The Civic Si is the beast. Well, some car enthusiasts say that the 1.5-liter engine can't be called a sports engine. But you should try driving the Civic with this beast under the hood. The vehicle is just amazing.

The real test drive shows 6.8 seconds from 0 to 60 mph which is amazing for such a vehicle. Also, the top speed of the Civic Si is thought to be around 137 mph. We believe it's limited by the ECU because a 200-horsepower engine can go better for sure.

The Civic Si comes with a manual transmission. This is a 6-speed gearbox with short gears and very sporty shifting. It's a great choice because a CVT would die on the second day of your active driving. Also, a traditional automatic transmission would just spoil the emotions you can get when you are driving your new Civic.

So, the Civic Si is very fast. But this is not the only advantage you can get from a car. The Japanese vehicle is also prepared for tracks. It steers wonderfully and can go to sharp turns easily with no sharp braking. Yes, driving this car in the city is not a big pleasure because the suspension is stiff. But it pays off when you want some speed.

What about other engines?

So, now you know that if you want to speed up like hell, you should pay for the Si trim. The car is pretty good for drivers who love sports. But what about the less expensive vehicles? You also know from our article, that there are two other engines in Honda Civic vehicles.

The 2-liter engine is not turbocharged. It's a very reliable and long-lasting engine with no major problems. You can rely on it and you can expect something like 200 000 or 250 000 miles with this engine. But it's not very fast. It takes 8.2 seconds to speed up to 60 mph from 0 mph. Also, these vehicles will have a lower top speed of 125 miles per hour.

The 1.5-liter turbocharged engines with 180 horsepower are a little better. The producer states that this car can speed up from 0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. It's not bad at all. Also, the top speed is not marvelous - it's only 126 mph.

As you see, all Civics are quite fast. Some trims are better because they have better and more technological engines. But even the cheapest Civic LX will not disappoint you at all.

Can you make your Civic even faster?

A lot of drivers ask us whether they can tune the engines in a Civic to make it even faster. This is a very complicated question. If you go to a tuning specialist, he or she will say to you that it's possible - just pay your money. But we don't recommend any kinds of tuning, especially Stage 2 and Stage 3 changes.

We have a lot of reasons to support this idea:

  • the 2-liter engine is not good for tuning, even a small gain in power can destroy your CVT and bring huge expenses;
  • the 1.5-liter engines (both of them) are turbocharged and they get the most power out of their displacement;
  • any kind of tuning for the 1.5 Civic will mean sharp deterioration of longevity of your vehicle;
  • the best you can get with Stage 1 tuning is around plus 20 horsepower which is not good at all - you will not feel any difference;
  • all kinds of tuning will assist you in voiding the warranty which is an extremely bad idea with a Honda.

If you void the warranty of your Honda vehicle, you lose the protection that the manufacturer offers you. Any kind of repair of your Honda vehicle will be a disaster for your budget. Even buying some parts, even if they are aftermarket parts, will be a very expensive task for you. Also, labor for these vehicles costs quite a lot.

Hope you will not want to tune your car because this brings more harm than good, in most cases.

Will Civic Si be a good car for track?

Some guys want to buy their new car for multipurpose driving. For example, they want to have a good ride in the evening around the lively city. Also, they sometimes want to drive on intercity highways with a maximum legal speed. Also, they want to go to a racing track and check what their car can do.

In this case, the Civic Si is one of the best cars you can buy. But don't let the ads fool you. This is not a racing car. This is just a vehicle that can let you drive actively and let you have some fun when you drive it. But racing with other sports cars will not be a very good idea. Overheating this engine will result in very bad consequences.

Final words

As you see, the Honda Civic is not a slow vehicle at all. The last generation of the Civic is pretty fast and it offers three engines for all kinds of buyers. People also love the way the car drives, the way it handles, the way it holds the road. Also, more than a quarter million Civics a year are sold in the US, and this is a very important sign of the quality of the car.

Of course, you should take the Civic on a test drive before you start driving it. This way, you will make sure that the car suits you.
