Here are some key questions the article will touch on:

  • What are the types and locations of cat converters in the Isuzu Rodeo?
  • What's the average and top scrap price of the Isuzu cat converter?
  • How can you sell an OEM catalytic converter from your Rodeo?
  • Will you need a replacement converter and how to get it?

Let's get started!

Where is the Isuzu Rodeo catalytic converter located?

If you want to sell something, you should learn where you can take this thing. First of all, we should note that you can sell all types of converters including aftermarket ones. But only OEM Isuzu or GM converters will be more or less valuable in comparison with aftermarket cats. If your Rodeo has an aftermarket cat, read no further, just sell it to one of the scrapyards in your area for $25-$30.

So, how to check? Your Rodeo has its catalytic converter located under the vehicle, right before the muffler. A Rodeo may have an L4 or a V6 engine, and this will change the number of converters available for you to sell. V6 engines have two cats while 4-cylinder units will have one cat.

Here's what you should know about these Isuzu converters:

  • some Rodeo vehicles may have General Motors catalytic converters and they are a little less valuable;
  • the majority of the vehicles will still have Isuzu cats which may be considered foreign catalytic converters and cost a little more;
  • these converters are all located under the car, they are welded into the exhaust pipe and covered with a heat screen;
  • the cats are very durable, even after 20 years of using your Isuzu, you can still make sure they are intact, with no rust on them;
  • unfortunately, inside, these catalytic converters may be damaged or clogged after 120-150 thousand miles on them;
  • the engines installed in the Rodeo may live longer than that, so the clogged cats should be replaced with new ones to keep driving your SUV legally.

OEM converters will have serial numbers on them. You are a lucky Isuzu owner if you still can read this number. This way, you'll be able to quickly estimate the price of the old converter and also find a better substitution for it.

Unfortunately, the serial numbers are very often destroyed over time, so you can't find and read them when you need. But for scrapyards and recycling companies this is not a big problem, they will still differentiate and estimate the price of your converter to offer you a certain amount of money for it.

How can you sell your car? We know a lot of ways

When it comes to selling a used catalytic converter from your Isuzu Rodeo, you should try a couple of ways to find out which way will give you a better price. We know at least four ways to get rid of a used cat and get some money instead.

Here are the most popular and obvious ways and some comments for you to consider:

  1. Scrapyards. Probably, 80% of Americans will think about scrapyards when they need to sell an old converter from Isuzu Rodeo. But actually, these companies never recycle cats, they just resell them. So, they will offer about half of the real price.
  2. Exhaust shops. Sometimes, your exhaust mechanic will offer you a discount for the used converter. It can be really convenient for someone but don't think that the discount will be big enough - just $50 or something like that.
  3. eBay. Another method to remember here is advertising your cat converter for sale on eBay. It's a good option if you have plenty of time and the converter is still working and can pass fog tests. This way, you can sell it at the most lucrative price.
  4. Recycling companies. These are the companies that buy and recycle catalytic converters. After that, they sell platinum, palladium, and also rhodium that they get from cats and this forms their revenue. This is our advice for you.

Also, you may have heard about different resellers and middlemen. They may be private buyers or small companies that buy cat converters and then resell them to recycling companies. We don't see any reason why you should go to these guys - you can earn this money by yourself, just sell your catalytic converter to a recycling company and that's it!

Scrap prices for Isuzu Rodeo catalytic converters

Well, the short answer is: your big converter from the Isuzu Rodeo should cost about $220 as a scrap part while the smaller cats that come in an assembly of two will cost around $150 each.

This is not a guaranteed price because the market of used catalytic converters is changing all the time. It means you can sell an Isuzu Rodeo converter for $220 today, but in a week the situation will be totally different.

Here's what can affect the price of your Rodeo catalytic converter:

  • the current price for metals - palladium and platinum are the main ones to consider, but rhodium may also influence the price;
  • the availability of other sources of these metals on the market - sometimes recycling companies run out of their scrap materials and they are ready to pay more for cats;
  • the condition of the catalytic converter - very often, the old cats look like they are empty, this is an important factor for price estimation;
  • the place you are selling your catalytic converter to - we've discussed what places you can choose, and they will offer different prices.

So, if your Rodeo catalytic converter costs about $50-$70 when sold to a scrapyard, it should cost around $220 when sold to a recycling company.

To sell your cat to a big recycling company, you will only need to quote online. Find a couple of websites belonging to recycling companies that buy out car cats and just send pictures of your converter to these websites. In a day or two, specialists will send you their offers and will let you compare the prices.

Will you have to buy a replacement cat converter?

Enough of good news for today. Unfortunately, after selling your Isuzu Rodeo catalytic converter for about $220, you will not be able to drive your vehicle with a hole in your exhaust pipe. First of all, it's very loud, and also, it's not legal at all.

You will have to buy at least an aftermarket catalytic converter to cope with the problems. Also, you will need to have the job done. And the labor costs are sometimes surprisingly high.

Here's what you need to do with your vehicle:

  • buy a new converter - it may be an OEM (which is extremely expensive) or an aftermarket cat, alternatively, you can buy a used cat converter;
  • take your vehicle to an exhaust shop - these guys will make sure that all welding jobs are done properly and the cat sits firmly in its place;
  • get your car to the fog test once it's needed - the fog test will show whether the converter is good and can be used in your vehicle or needs some adjustments.

It may well be that the catalytic converter will need some additional ways of improving its efficiency. For example, the fog test may show that your vehicle releases too much of a certain element into the atmosphere. This will result in urgent work with your car to make it less harmful to nature.

Unfortunately, all these actions will cost you some money. And your expenses will be much higher than your revenue from selling the old catalytic converter. But at least, this will compensate for some of your expenses.

Final words

Well, you can sell your catalytic converter from the Isuzu Rodeo. And this will not be a hard task for anyone if you have already read our article. Just follow the simple instruction we've written above and find the best price offer for your old catalytic converter. In many cases, you will be able to sell the Rodeo cat at a much better price than with any scrapyard.

But never drive your car without a converter. It's not only loud but also illegal and may lead to a massive fine.
