Jaguar I-PACE Charging Problems - Here's What You Can Do

Jaguar is one of the most well-known luxury car manufacturers in the world belonging to Jaguar Land Rover Corporation. And its effort in the electric vehicle market is hard to overestimate. We see that the I-PACE has become one of the most wanted EV SUVs and it's not strange at all because the vehicle is wonderful.

The model was built to compete in the strong growing market and it appeared to be really wonderful. But today, we won't be only speaking about the pros of the I-PACE. Instead, we'll talk about the problems with charging and will offer you some solutions because a lot of people have been reporting this issue and couldn't find any ways to resolve the problem.

Jaguar i-pace charging problems

Here's what we'll be talking about:

  • Charging your Jaguar I-PACE - what should you know?
  • Can you charge the I-PACE at any charger out there?
  • Why isn't your I-PACE charging when you plug it in?
  • What are the solutions you may try without a dealership?
  • When should you consult with your dealer about the Jaguar not charging?

Let's get started!

What should you know about charging your Jaguar I-PACE?

Jaguar makes luxurious cars that have a lot of control modules. Sometimes even an excessive amount of these modules is presented. In your I-PACE, you have a couple of control modules that control the charging process. They slow down or speed up the charging process to prolong the lifespan of the battery. Sounds cool, but it's not so cool in real life.

Well, Jaguar tested this car really well and you shouldn't have any problems with charging unless you break some important rules and don't follow recommendations on charging the vehicle.

Here are some important rules you should know:

  1. The fastest charging in your EV will occur when the battery is between 20% and 80% of its full capacity. This is the safest range for all batteries, so try to not drive over the limit of 20% and don't charge the battery over 80% unless you need more range.
  2. Charging in unverified charging stations and just some random sockets can be problematic. The HSE version can charge at 7.4 kW. If you just give more power, it may break. Well, not in a fast charger, but some inappropriate socket, of course.
  3. Charging your battery in the I-PACE is only possible if you have the appropriate equipment. The socket of your Jaguar is pretty special and most charging stations will not allow you to use their plugs and wires to charge your SUV.
  4. Try to avoid using any kinds of connectors and adapters for charging your Jaguar in a random charging station - you may just get it broken or spoil the battery because the charging patterns on this station don't suit your vehicle.
  5. The best option for charging your I-PACE is to purchase a wall box offered by Jaguar and use your home electricity grid to maintain the battery. This box works well with the control modules in your car and this will ensure the battery is safe from any problems.

Sounds weird to a person who has always driven a gasoline-powered vehicle and only spent 5 minutes to get a full tank of gas once a week. Yeah, electric vehicles are different and you have to put up with this somehow.

If you follow all the charging recommendations from Jaguar and you still have problems with the charging process, keep reading the article. We'll outline the main reported problems and tell you what you should do.

What are the most common charging problems with the Jaguar I-PACE?

First of all, we should say that about 10% of I-PACE owners report minor problems with charging. We've outlined the most common ones:

  1. Slow charging. If your wall box just gives 5-7% an hour, this may be challenging because you'll need to leave your vehicle for 20 hours plugged in to get it fully charged. The problem is pretty common and we'll discuss its possible reasons and solutions later.
  2. No charging. If your I-PACE doesn't want to charge at all, check the connectors, and ensure the grid is working and has the electricity flow in it. Make sure the vehicle doesn't send you any error messages on the dash.
  3. Charging stops spontaneously. This is in most cases due to charging station problems. Once your vehicle starts taking more energy than the grid may offer, it just shuts off and throws some error at you. The best decision is to reconnect your Jaguar and start charging it once more.
  4. The indicator doesn't change the charging percentage. It means that the charger doesn't send any energy to the battery. Your vehicle identifies that a charger is plugged in, but it can't take any energy, so the indicator stays on the same level. Usually, the problem is due to the charger.
  5. Errors and messages on dash. This is the worst situation which, thank goodness, happens rarely. If your vehicle shows error messages and stops charging the battery, the problem may occur due to a bad battery or broken control modules. In this case, you should visit a dealership to solve the problem.

Well, you can see that most problems are connected to a bad charging station or the absence of energy in the grid. But two problems should be worrying. If you see any errors, codes, or messages on the dash when your car refuses to take charge, you should visit your dealer. In most cases, the problem is connected to some control modules or battery issues.

If the vehicle is charging too slowly, some other problems may be to blame. Let's see what can cause slow charging of your Jaguar I-PACE.

Why does slow charging occur with my I-PACE?

Well, sometimes the solution for your problem is just simple and easy-to-apply, but slow charging may also be a sign of a big problem. You should investigate simple solutions and try them before you dive into more expensive problems.

Here are the possible fixes for the slow-charging problem of your I-PACE:

  • Wallbox settings. A lot of chargers have settings that switch between 3 and 7.4 kW. Just make sure your charger is properly set and can send the needed amount of energy to the battery.
  • App settings. Very often, drivers go through a big range of possible problems and solutions before they realize that they haven't changed the charging settings and control modules in their I-PACE SUVs to limit the charging power.
  • Lack of power in the grid. Most home grids are not very powerful allowing you a maximum of 7.4 kW. It means if you turn on your AC at home, a kettle, and a vacuum cleaner, a maximum of 3.5 kW will be left for charging the EV.
  • Wiring problems. We've seen some people who changed worn wires in their wall boxes and bought thinner wires for this with a maximum capacity of 3-4 kW. Then, they started searching for possible problems with slow charging.
  • Battery issues. Unfortunately, if you have already checked everything, you need to go to the dealer and check whether the battery is still OK or maybe some controller is broken.

A Jaguar I-PACE is a high-quality EV and you can easily drive it for years experiencing no problems. But sometimes, a drop of water in a certain place may make things much worse. A battery is well protected from water damage, but still, risks are there.

If nothing helps, the best solution is to go to the dealer and try to investigate the problem with the professional diagnosing equipment.

How to know if it's a charger or a vehicle to blame?

The easiest way to understand where you should try to find the problem is to change the charging point. For example, you may have noticed that your Jaguar charges really slowly at home. Go to a commercial charging station, plug it in and see if it takes 11-13% an hour.

If not, maybe the problem is with the battery or controller. Or the chance is you just need to check the settings in the MyPACE app and adjust the charging pattern to your needs. Anyway, a Jaguar dealer or customer support should help you with this. If your vehicle is still under warranty, this should be done at no cost which is good news for you.

Final words

We don't see the Jaguar I-PACE as the leader in the class. In the US, we would better go for the Tesla Model X or Model Y because of better infrastructure and much more developed support. In Europe and the UK, we would look at Volkswagen's new EVs or again choose a Tesla. But there are still a lot of potential buyers for the Jaguar on the market and we can understand them.

The vehicle looks cool and feels cool on the road, it offers the wonderful range and all other important pros of an EV SUV. If you happen to suffer from a charging problem, we are sure you can solve it after reading this article.
