2021-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7L Hemi V8 Engine: Longevity, Problems, and Specs

The V8 engine type of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee engine is the 5.7L Hemi V8. It is one of the many engine configurations that are available for this Jeep model. While it may not be the best of engines, there are many unique features of the 5.7L V8 engine.

Aside from the standard V6 engine option, there are other two powertrains available to users of the Jeep Grand Cherokee. These include V8 and hybrid (4xe). Depending on your lifestyle and budget, Jeep provides you with the chance to enjoy the AWD system either during harsh or smooth weather. Some of these powertrains also come with the improved 4WD system that improves user's off-road and winter experiences.

Overview of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The V8 version of the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee is not very different from the V6. Only a few differences exist between the two engines. As customary to V8 engines, you would have a louder engine and a bit more performance. Also, to have this additional engine boost, you must be willing to throw in some extra cash.

Looking at a V8 engine in a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee, you can expect to see the same beautiful aesthetics as the V6 model. However, the engine properties are wide apart and the difference is clear.

If you want a quiet and averagely performing vehicle, then the V8 Hemi engine is not for you. Although the V8 Hemi-5.7L engine is not the best out there, it outperforms the V6 and can do more.

One of the notable features of the V8 engine is its towing capacity. Most Jeeps are unique because of their ability to hold more load and the V8 shines in this area as it has one of the highest Jeep towing capacities.

2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Engine Specifications

Aside from the engine types, most of the specifications found on a 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 are like V6.

Here are some features you will want to know about the engine:

  • Engine Specifications

The engine of a vehicle determines the performance and expectations a car owner can have from it. When opting for the V8 engine, you must be ready to handle the benefits and maintenance costs attached to its ownership.

The engine has a power capacity of 357 hp and a maximum torque capacity of 390 lb-ft. Additionally, you can fuel this vehicle with regular fuel and do not have to spend more for maximum performance.

As all other powertrains in the new Grand Cherokee, this one is equipped with the 8-Speed automatic transmission. This transmission is designed to deliver more performance for a lesser power expenditure.

This engine configuration comes in a 4WD (4-wheel drive) and this affords the vehicle a chance for some off-road experience. You can have some dirt road experience without losing engine performance.

When it comes to towing capacity, the V8 engine performs seamlessly and successfully. Having a towing capacity of up to 7200 pounds, this engine can handle almost any towing. This is one of the features where the V8 shines when compared to the V6 engine.

To produce the expected performance, the V8 is gas-fueled and fuel is injected through gasoline indirect injection. This engine is an OHV engine, which implies that the layout is structured to support the sound and output of the engine. OHV engines are known to have a quicker, smoother, and more thorough exhaust making them the right option for a V8 engine.

  • Fuel efficiency and actual MPG

The V8 Hemi engine configuration is estimated at a fuel mileage of 14 and 22 mpg for the city and highway. Although these figures can vary based on the wheel drive in use. As you can expect, the other engine configurations have a somewhat better fuel efficiency than the V8.

In terms of fuel efficiency, the V8 engine is the least efficient engine among the three defined powertrains. It consumes more fuel to meet up its performance requirements.

Longevity of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7-L V8 Engine

Since the 2022 V8 engine is an OHV engine, there is a limited amount of 2 valves per cylinder. This is low in comparison with 4 cylinders in a DOHC V6 engine. Having 2 valves per cylinder means the powerful V8 engine will heat up quickly as there is not enough airflow. Due to this engine limitation, its longevity is largely implicated.

Other factors aside from this engine configuration may also influence the engine's longevity. Such factors may include:

  • Maintenance: Engine maintenance is one of the most important parts of maintaining any engine. It is very important to service an engine regularly to keep it active and high performing. Included in maintenance is the use of the engine. Using an engine for tasks beyond its stated capacities can have adverse effects on the engine.
  • Operations: another factor that can affect the longevity of an engine is the use of the engine. The purpose an engine is used to serve can have a detrimental or enabling effect on it.

Nevertheless, the V8 engine in the Grand Cherokee will live at least 200,000 miles. Careful drivers will get their 5.7L Hemi engines to 300,000 miles and even more without the need to repair the unit.

Common problems of Jeep Grand Cherokee V8 Engines

When used often and not consistently serviced, your Grand Cherokee will eventually develop faults. Nonetheless, some faults will take priority over others, and here are the most common problems you can encounter while using your vehicle:

  • Engine stalling and lack of acceleration

The Jeep Grand Cherokee received numerous complaints about both faults over multiple model years. The most common fault on the 2016 models was a loss of acceleration, in which the engine would lose all motive power at random while driving.

The engine stalling issue was prevalent in the 2016 model year, but it continued throughout the subsequent model years as well. The engine stalling reports state that the engine might stall while driving. Stalls would be more common when the vehicle comes to a complete stop at a signal or an intersection to make a turn.

  • Heating up

The V8 engine does not get enough airflow and this may affect the performance of the engine over time. The engine can heat up when driving at high RPMs or when towing something extremely heavy.

  • Transmission problems

The Grand Cherokee has been plagued by transmission problems for a while. Particularly, the SUV's fourth generation model was severely hampered by gearbox problems, and the 2022 model still exhibits these problems. Hard shifts with jerking and the transmission exiting drive mode while driving were the most often reported transmission problems.

  • Engine failure to restart

This issue was one of the most often reported complaints. Most reports state that when driving, the engine would stall after coming to a complete stop, and in many cases, it would not restart despite all the car's electronics functioning properly. Most of the time, the problem was a bad fuel pump relay, but occasionally, the cam phasers needed to be replaced.

Final words

The V8 Hemi version of the 2022 Jeep Cherokee engine has its benefits and its downsides. While it exhibits higher performance and tends to be louder, it is also more expensive. Most of the problems in this engine model are due to its increase in performance and higher energy output.

If you are not looking to tow any load beyond 6200 pounds, you may want to consider the V6 alternative. Regardless of these V8 engine issues, it is a good buy if you can maintain it.
