We are going to discuss the following:

  • What kinds of cat converters does KIA Soul use?
  • How much should an old KIA Soul converter cost?
  • Where and how can you sell an old converter from your Soul?
  • Should you worry about possible catalytic converter theft issues?

Let's get started!

What are the cats that are installed in the KIA Soul?

As the world moves on with new technologies, we get more EVs on the roads. And you should know that the Soul EV is not equipped with a catalytic converter because it doesn't emit any harmful gases when moving. So, everything we'll be talking about concerns only the fuel-powered engines of the KIA Soul.

Also, you should know that the Soul model has used different types of engines and this will affect the type of converter you have in your car. It can be one or two cats depending on the engine type and displacement. But in most vehicles, you will have two converters - one pre-cat and one main cat converter.

Here's something you should know about the KIA Soul cats:

  • these converters are all Korean made, they may have KIA and/or Hyundai logos on their bodies to denote they are OEM;
  • also, OEM converters will obviously have serial numbers on them unless their bodies aren't rusted to the end;
  • these converters aren't so big, so they fall into the category of "foreign small" catalytic converters when assessing their price;
  • even though they are small, these cats can contain a lot of precious metals, so they are still valuable;
  • these cats are pretty durable, they can live as long as your Soul lives, but sometimes they still die sooner and require replacement;
  • pre-cats are smaller and usually located near the exhaust manifold while main cats are somewhat bigger and are placed near the muffler;
  • to replace the cat converter, you will need to buy a new OEM or aftermarket cat and weld it into the system.

In most cases, to deal with the catalytic converter, it's better to go to one of the exhaust shops because mechanics know how to take them off without damaging the exhaust assembly. Also, they understand how to weld the new converters in the system so that they worked properly and didn't cause any leaks.

Please bear in mind that if your KIA Soul already has aftermarket cat converters in the system, these parts are not going to cost a lot. They should just be sold to a local scrapyard for $25 or something like that. Aftermarket cats don't contain a lot of precious metals and they aren't really valuable.

How much can you get for a KIA Soul converter?

A scrap converter (OEM) from your KIA Soul should cost anywhere between $90 and $220. This is the current price range. The eventual price depends on a lot of factors which you should also know.

For example. the offered price for the cat converter depends on whether it's in good condition or not. A shabby cat with holes in it and with a totally rusted body will only cost a little. While buyers can offer good money for a converter that still looks good.

Also, the price offer depends highly on the current prices for platinum, palladium, and rhodium. These metals are presented in your old cat, so their price will define the offer you may get for your cat.

The eventual price may also differ according to the company or private buyer you are going to deal with. While some private resellers will offer $90, some recycling companies will give you over $200 for the same cat. All you need to do is to investigate and find someone ready to pay a better price.

As you see, not much depends on you. But you may choose who you want to sell your catalytic converter to. Sometimes, this may help you double the price offer you get for the KIA Soul cat converter.

Where to sell a KIA Soul catalytic converter?

So, now you understand that the price of your OEM catalytic converter from the KIA Soul will depend much on where you sell it. It may be a private buyer r a company. But they should provide you with the best price offer. How do you understand that a certain price for your Soul cat converter is the best?

We know one method that will help you to check the current prices for cat converters and also find the best option to sell the converter immediately.

Here's what you should do:

  • take off the converter from your car or better have it taken off;
  • take pictures of the cat showing its condition and the serial number;
  • go online and search for websites of recycling companies dealing with catalytic converters;
  • use these websites to quote - they will normally offer this option;
  • after you quote, wait for a day or two and these companies will send their offers back to you;
  • at this point, you'll be able to compare the price offers and see the average price.

Usually, three to five recycling companies are enough to see the average price. Also, this will help you understand if other offers are good or bad. For example, a local scrapyard or a middleman offers you $100 for the cat converter from your KIA Soul. You don't know if it's a fair price and just do what we advise here.

After you get the price offers, you will be able to compare the offered prices with other offers you have. Selling a catalytic converter this way is much easier than chaotically trying to find a good option.

What happens then with your KIA Soul cat converter?

The converter finally gets to one of the recycling companies. Even if you sell it to a local scrapyard or to a private buyer, they will resell it and earn some money. Eventually, a recycling company will recycle this cat, extract certain precious metals from it and sell these metals to get revenue.

The fact that eventually, a recycling company will get all the used malfunctioning converters proves that these companies are the best options when you are trying to sell the old scrap cat. They normally pay the best prices for converters.

What about eBay buyers?

You may also try to sell the catalytic converter from your KIA Soul on eBay. Usually, private buyers will want to buy these cats and use them as a replacement for their old cars.

For this, your converter should still be working and able to pass the fog test. Otherwise, it doesn't make sense for a person to buy such a cat converter. Is your cat still working properly but you still want to sell it? Then, you may try eBay.

Are KIA Souls prone to catalytic converter theft?

Nominally, a KIA Soul is supposed to be an SUV. But actually, it's just a hatchback with a bigger body and somewhat higher ground clearance. And now, it's not the most popular car for catalytic converter thieves because of some strong reasons.

First of all, these cats don't have extremely expensive catalytic converters. Their cats are just average and are not that interesting to thieves.

Secondly, these converters are pretty hard to cut off the vehicle. A thief will obviously need to jack up the car somehow and this makes the task much harder.

Also, KIA Souls have only one main catalytic converter. Thieves will be magnetized to the cars that have two main cats of a bigger size. This way, they can get more money by having the same amount of risk.

But still, KIA Souls have been reported to be robbed in terms of catalytic converters. So, you should be careful when parking your car in any dangerous areas.

Final words

So, the average price for a catalytic converter from your KIA Soul may be between $90 and $220. The eventual price depends on many factors that have been carefully listed above. You should also remember that different sellers offer various prices, so you should try your luck with a couple of them before making the final decision. And never lose your money by selling the cat to a reseller or scrapyard.
