Land Rover Catalytic Converter Scrap Price – How Much Will You Get?

Land Rover is a British car manufacturer that sells vehicles all over the world. The company mainly offers SUVs and off-road vehicles for different purposes. We love these cars even though they aren't very popular and are obviously not the most reliable. They are still beautiful, efficient, powerful, big, and very comfortable.

Land Rover vehicles, like all other modern cars, are equipped with a catalytic converter. This part helps them release less harmful emissions and be more eco-friendly. The vehicles usually have big converters and you may wonder how much money you can get for them once the converters are broken. This is a very interesting but not so easy-to-answer question.

Land Rover cat converter scrap price

Here's what we'll discuss today:

  1. Land Rover catalytic converters - original or aftermarket?
  2. What's the scrap price of a Land Rover cat converter?
  3. How much is the new cat converter for a Land Rover?
  4. Where can you sell your Land Rover converter at a bigger price?

Let's get started!

Land Rover cat converters - where are they located?

You will find a Land Rover catalytic converter right under your vehicle or sometimes in the engine compartment where the exhaust manifold connects with the exhaust pipe. In all cars, the cat converter will be located somewhere between the exhaust manifold and the muffler. It's not that hard to find it because it's quite big and it actually looks like a muffler.

The cat converter is a metal barrel that contains a ceramic honeycomb which is a filtering element. The most important thing is that the ceramic honeycomb is covered with a special metal alloy that contains platinum, palladium, and also rhodium.

And here the most interesting part starts:

  • original Land Rover catalytic converters are very rich in these precious metals, so they are usually quite expensive;
  • these converters live a long life and don't rust, so scrapyards and recycling companies are usually glad to buy them;
  • most Land Rover cars have two converters, both of them are valuable and can be sold to recycling companies;
  • original Land Rover cats are not that hard to recycle, and this is one more factor for the good price of these cats;
  • though, you shouldn't expect that you'll get $500 a cat, you should be realistic about the prices for the scrap converters you have;
  • also, Land Rover has installed different types of converters, the price will obviously depend on the type, year, etc.

You should understand that recycling companies buy cats to make money. They will get those precious metals out, prepare them and then sell them twice more expensive to get some revenue. Your task is to find someone who will pay you more money for the Land Rover catalytic converters you have in your hands. It's not hard if you know what to do.

But before that make sure you have the original cats. They should have a serial number on them and most often they will also have the Land Rover logo. If they don't, we are pretty sure you have aftermarket cats and they aren't very valuable. You will be able to sell aftermarket cats for $10-$20 to your local scrapyard. It doesn't make sense to spend your time on them.

What about original Land Rover scrap cats' prices?

If you are sure that your cats are original, you can sell them to a recycling company or to any other seller at a better price. Unfortunately, a lot of Land Rover owners don't know the average prices and because of this, they sell their scrap cat converters at bad prices. You should check the prices in different places before you agree to sell your cat.

A single Land Rover cat take from a big-displacement engine should cost around $120. Given most Land Rovers have two cats, you can get about $240 for the set of cats. It's not bad! The problem is that most Land Rover owners will sell their cats for $60-$70 because they just don't know the real prices.

One good strategy you should use is the possibility to learn prices in different places. This will help you get more money for the pieces of scrap metal you will never need. So, why not try?

How to sell your Land Rover catalytic converters?

Now, we want to tell you about the most important part of understanding the prices for your catalytic converters. It's not only about checking the prices in different places, but it's also about choosing an optimal company to sell your cat converter to.

So, you can sell your cat to a car mechanic or to a car shop. They will probably pay $30 or something - or they will not even pay but make a discount for you. This is not the best option at all.

Also, you may try to sell your cat converter to a local scrapyard. It's a very fast way to get rid of scrap parts, but you will only get $50 or maybe sometimes a little more money. It's also not the best option.

Then, there are people who buy out cat converters for cash. They are middlemen and they offer better prices - up to $70-$90 for each Land Rover cat converter. Still, it's not good enough, but better than the previous options.

And finally, you can sell your catalytic converter to a recycling company. Take pictures of your cat, send them to some recycling companies (you can find them online), wait for their price quotes, and choose the best company to work with.

Here are some advantages of selling your old cats to recycling companies:

  • it's absolutely legal, you will not play tricks with the law;
  • your cat converter will be recycled in an eco-friendly way;
  • you will get the highest prices you can possibly get on the market;
  • you will not have to do anything special - just send the converter to the company you've chosen;
  • you can check prices in numerous companies and choose the best one;
  • you can be sure that your cat will not be resold.

All scrapyards and middlemen do basically the same - they find some recycling company and sell your catalytic converter at a better price making their money. You can make this money by yourself - why should you just give your profit to someone else?

Recycling companies specialize in getting precious metals out of catalytic converters. So, they know for sure how much your original Land Rover cat should cost.

The new catalytic converter for a Land Rover vehicle

When you have a catalytic converter broken in your British car, you should be prepared to spend some money. That's why it's so important to find a company that will buy your scrap cat converter at a better price. You will compensate more money for your expenses.

If you need to buy a cat converter for your Land Rover, you have a couple of ways:

  1. The used remanufactured cats. They are a bad choice because they have an unpredictable lifespan and they are not always good for fog tests. This is a big problem.
  2. New aftermarket cat converters. They are not bad if they are made by good manufacturers. But the majority of aftermarket cats have two problems: a short lifespan and also bad results during a fog test.
  3. New original cat converters. This is the best option but it has a little problem - the price. Usually, a Land Rover cat converter will cost about $1000 and you will have to buy two of them.

You have no choice - if your cat converters are broken and don't clean the exhaust gasses anymore, you need to buy something instead of them. And usually, Land Rover owners go for aftermarket cats. It's OK, but you should bear in mind that these cats don't live long. At least, you should choose good brands.

It's much better to buy cat converters that are integrated into exhaust pipes. A lot of brands sell aftermarket cats that you should weld into the existing exhaust pipes. Welding lines will get some rust very quickly and they will just ruin in a year.

Don't forget that you will have to pay for labor when you need to replace catalytic converters for your Land Rover. Unfortunately, repair shops that specialize in this brand are usually not very cheap.

Final words

The big wish to sell catalytic converters after they malfunction is not only caused by the need of getting money. Land Rover owners just want to compensate a little for their huge expenses when they need to get their cat converters replaced. Never put your old original catalytic converters on a shelf in your garage - these things can make some money.

Don't agree to sell your catalytic converter at some bad prices. You should try and find the best price from a recycling company that specializes in cat converter recycling. These companies are glad to estimate the price of your catalytic converter by pictures that you can easily make. This way, you can make more money than if you just sell your cat to a scrapyard or to a middleman.
