If you own a Mitsubishi Galant, you should know that this is a pretty reliable and tough car made by the Japanese manufacturer. This vehicle is known to have a lot of advantages. Its only problem as of today is that the vehicle is really old. The freshest Galant on American roads was made and sold in 2012 which means all of these models are now older than 10 years.
Today, we'll be concentrating on the Mitsubishi Galant catalytic converter scrap and the way to sell these cats. How much they should cost? And who will want to buy these scrap parts? We'll see what ways of selling these converters you actually have and how you should sell them to get more money. Also, we'll work with some myths about Galant converters and their prices.
Here's what we are going to talk about:
- What types of converters were used in Mitsubishi Galant models?
- How long will the average Galant converter survive?
- How much should a catalytic converter cost from a Galant?
- Who will buy those converters and how to choose the best buyer?
- Will you need a replacement catalytic converter for your Galant?
Let's get started!
Location and types of converters for the Mitsubishi Galant
The Galant was made from 1969 to 2012 and has changed nine generations. Of course, earlier generations are pretty hard to find on the roads because all of them are pretty old and have a lot of miles on them. The majority of older cars now have rest at scrapyards or have already been recycled. But the ninth generation (2004-2012) is still pretty popular on the roads.
The Galant was a very popular model, so we know for sure that the vehicle is really durable and good. But the cat converter is not going to survive as long as the vehicle itself. So, it's a very common question for Galant owners - how much will a scrap converter cost from their vehicles? Let's see what type of cats was used in these cars.
Here's what you should know:
- the last-gen Galant used V6 and L4 engines, the V6 3.8-liter option was the most popular;
- usually, these cars had one pre-cat for each exhaust manifold and one or two main catalytic converters depending on the year;
- the L4 engines have two equal converters integrated in the exhaust manifold;
- pre-cats are smaller, they are placed near each exhaust manifold, so the quantity depends on the type of the engine;
- main converters are bigger and more valuable, they are located between the engine and the muffler;
- main cats are covered with heat shields to avoid heat damage to other parts, so it's not hard to locate them;
- converters in these models contain platinum and palladium, main cats can also have a little rhodium in them;
- each converter should have a serial number on it, otherwise, the cat may be aftermarket which will heavily affect the price.
So, to sell a converter from your Mitsubishi Galant, you will need to take it off the vehicle. Be careful if you decide to do it by yourself. If you damage the converter, its scrap price will fall and the expected offer will be ten times worse than it could be for a non-damaged converter. So, taking these parts off the vehicle is only reasonable in the exhaust shop.
Also, aftermarket converters aren't worth that much. It means that if someone has already replaced the OEM converter in your vehicle, you will not be able to sell it for good money. In most cases though, the last-gen Galant will have an OEM converter and will likely have it in good condition, at least from the outside.
How long will a Mitsubishi Galant converter live?
The average lifespan of an OEM Mitsubishi catalytic converter in your Galant should be between 150,000 and 200,000 miles. Few cats will live longer than that. But they can still look OK, so it shouldn't be a problem to sell them to some company and to get some money.
Usually, a catalytic converter from a Galant should be sold when it's clogged, damaged, burnt out, or just shows poor results in a fog test. The majority of converters will fail their fog tests and only after that, they will be sold or just deleted.
If your cat can't pass the fog test, the best solution is to replace it. Otherwise, you will not be able to drive your Galant legally in most American states. If you replace your old converter, the best solution for the old one is to sell it as a scrap part.
How much will buyers give for an old Mitsubishi Galant cat converter?
The old converter from your Mitsubishi Galant is valuable because it contains precious metals that can be recycled and reused for industrial needs. That's why the average price for the pre-cat should be about $60 while the main converter from the Galant should cost between $180 and $240 depending on the serial number.
Throughout the years, Mitsubishi has used different types of cats for different engines and generations of the Galant. That's why prices may differ. Also, prices may change just because some important factors that influence these prices change.
For example, the following factors:
- prices for precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium;
- scrap metal prices (especially if they change dramatically);
- the condition of the scrap catalytic converter that you are trying to sell;
- the availability of other old converters that buyers may buy on the market;
- other small factors that can change the price in one or another way.
So, it takes some time to estimate the actual price of the catalytic converter in your Galant. And we'll tell you later in this article how exactly you can learn the up-to-date price of the old cat. By using the method, you will easily figure out how much money a certain company will be willing to pay.
Selling a cat converter from the Galant - how to get it done?
Well, a lot of people and companies actually want to buy your converter. One of the examples is eBay. You can sell your cat converter to one of the private buyers. But this will only work for cats that are in a good condition and can still pass the fog test. Any other converter will not be sold that way easily and at a good price.
Also, you may consider selling your old cat to a scrapyard, resellers, exhaust shops, car mechanics, etc. These buyers are ready to pay cash right there and then but they are not going to offer you a lot of money.
But here's how you can sell your Galant catalytic converter directly to a recycling company:
- take the cat off your Galant and clean it to show the actual condition;
- take pictures of the cat and make sure you can see the serial number on those pictures;
- find as many websites of these recycling companies as you can;
- use those websites to send them pictures of your cat and ask to estimate the price;
- they will send you their offers and will describe the way how you can sell your cat.
All you need to do then is to just compare all of the offers and choose the best one. This will help you get more money for the old cat and never lose your potential revenue.
If a scrapyard will offer $80 to $100 for a decent main cat converter from the Mitsubishi Galant, a recycling company may offer up to $240 for the same converter. So, it's obviously worth your time to try and sell the converter directly to a recycling company. Also, it's not going to be that hard and they will even pay for shipping.
Will you need a replacement converter?
You will obviously need a replacement catalytic converter if your state requires the emission test. The majority of states now have the fog test for all vehicles, so, yes, you will need a replacement cat.
Unfortunately, the OEM converter for your Mitsubishi Galant is hard to find and very expensive to buy. It means that the majority of buyers will try to buy aftermarket converters for $200-$400 each. Usually, one converter needs replacement while other ones can be cleaned and used for some more time.
Also, you should know that the labor will cost some money. It's not going to be extremely much, but still, you should calculate everything before you decide to replace a converter. Sometimes, the residual value of the car is not as big as the potential expenses for the new converter.
Final words
Your Mitsubishi Galant is not a very modern vehicle, but it can still drive. So, you will need a new catalytic converter once the old one is clogged or damaged. The best solution for the old cat converter is to sell it and get some money. Just learn how much money different companies will pay for the cat you have in your hands.
In most cases, the Galant converter will not compensate your expenses for the new cat. But it can still give you some money and reduce your costs for the replacement.
