What are the symptoms of a power steering problem on a Polaris ATV?

Electronic Power Steering (EPS) system is used in Polaris ATVs. This system uses sensors to detect the steering angle and speed. It then sends a signal to the motor, which assists in steering. This is a rather complex system, and that is why any problem with it can result in serious steering issues. There can be numerous symptoms of EPS problems, but some of the most common symptoms are as follows:

  • Loss of power steering

This is the most obvious symptom of power steering problems. Loss of power steering can make it difficult or even impossible to steer the vehicle. In some cases, the steering may feel uncomfortable There may also be strange noises coming from the steering system, such as squealing or grinding.

  • Orange indicator light on the dash

Some Polaris ATVs have an indicator light on the dash that will come on when there is a problem with the Polaris ATV power steering system. This light may be orange or red, and it may say "POWER STEERING" or have a picture of a steering wheel with an exclamation point. If this light comes on, it is an indication that there is a problem with the power steering system.

  • Polaris ATV whining or squealing noise when turning the steering wheel

This is another common symptom of power steering problems. The noise is caused by the pump struggling to circulate fluid. This can be due to a number of factors, including low fluid levels, the air in the system, or a failing pump.

  • The steering feels "heavy" or "stiff"

Loss of power steering assistance can make it difficult to steer the vehicle. The steering may feel "heavy" or "stiff". You may also notice that the vehicle wanders or drifts while driving. This can be dangerous, so pay attention to this symptom and have the problem checked out as soon as possible.

  • A burning smell coming from the steering area

If you notice a burning smell coming from the steering area, it could be due to a leak in the system. This can allow fluid to escape and come into contact with hot engine parts, causing the burning smell.

  • The cooling fan comes on, and the power steering turns off

Some owners reported that the cooling fan would come on and the power steering would turn off. The fan activates when the steering system gets too hot, and it is absolutely normal. However, when your power steering turns off, it may indicate a problem with your system.

What are the most common causes of Polaris ATV power steering problems on Polaris vehicles?

  • Battery problem

As was mentioned above, your power steering may turn off when your cooling fan comes on. It can be caused by the low voltage of your battery or other related problems. The battery may not be providing enough power to run the fan and the steering system at the same time. If you haven't had your battery checked in a while, this may be a good time to do so. This problem may manifest itself after several years of use.

  • Low fluid levels

Another common cause of Polaris ATV power steering problems is low fluid levels. Over time, the fluid in your system can become dirty or contaminated. This can cause the pump to struggle to circulate fluid, leading to loss of power steering and other problems. You should check your Polaris fluid levels regularly and top it off as needed.

  • Air in the system

One of the most common causes of Polaris ATV power steering problems is air in the EPS. Air can enter the system through leaks or when fluid is added. When there is too much air in the system, it can cause the pump to struggle to circulate fluid, leading to loss of power steering and other problems. You should have a professional bleed the air out of your system if you think this may be the problem.

  • Activation wire issues

Some owners have reported that their power steering problems were caused by activation wire issues. The activation wire is responsible for sending a signal to the pump telling it to turn on. If this wire is damaged, the pump will not receive the signal and will not turn on. This can lead to loss of Polaris ATV power steering and other problems. You should have a professional check the activation wire if you think this may be the problem.

  • Torque sensor issues

The torque sensor is responsible for sending a signal to the pump telling it how much steering assistance is needed. If this sensor is damaged, the pump will not receive the correct signal and will not provide the correct amount of power steering assistance. This can lead to loss of Polaris ATV power steering and other problems.

  • Failed pump

Another common cause of Polaris ATV power steering problems is a failed pump. The pump is responsible for circulating the fluid throughout the system. Over time, the pump can wear out or fail. This can lead to loss of Polaris ATV power steering and other problems. You should have a professional check the pump if you think this may be the problem.

Polaris models that have higher chances of suffering from power steering problems

2015 Polaris XP 900, XP 900 EPS, and CREW 900 have been known to suffer from power steering issues. These models were recalled in 2017. If you own one of these models, you should take it to a dealer to have it checked out.

What are some of the most common ways to fix a power steering problem on a Polaris vehicle?

  • Use the service manual

Before you start fixing your power steering issues, you should consult the service manual for your vehicle. The service manual will provide you with information on how to properly diagnose EPS problems. There are many complex sensors and wires in the EPS system, so it is important that you have a clear understanding of how it works before you start troubleshooting.

  • Install aftermarket power steering

One of the most common ways to fix a power steering problem on a Polaris vehicle is to install an aftermarket power steering kit. These kits can be found online or at your local Polaris dealer. Aftermarket kits typically come with everything you need to install them, including instructions.

  • Change the fluid

If your Polaris ATV power steering fluid is dirty or contaminated, you should have it changed. By doing this, you will remove any dirt and debris causing the problem.

  • Bleed the system

If there is too much air in the system, you should have a professional bleed the air out of your system. This will help to get rid of air that may be causing problems.

  • Check the activation wire

If you think the activation wire may be damaged, you should have a professional check it. This will help to determine if the wire is the problem.

  • Replace the pump

If you think the pump may be failing, you should have a professional replace it. This will help to ensure that the system is working properly.

  • Check/Replace the torque sensor

If you think the torque sensor may be damaged, you should have a professional check or replace it. This will help to ensure that the system is working properly.

  • Check/Replace the battery

Batteries tend to die out over time. If your power steering is not working, you should check the battery to see if it needs to be replaced, especially if you haven't replaced it in a while. You can check your battery voltage with a voltmeter. If the battery voltage is lower than 16 volts, it is time to replace the battery.

These are some of the most common ways to fix a power steering problem on a Polaris vehicle. However, if you are still having Polaris ATV EPS problems, you should take your vehicle to a professional for further diagnosis and repairs.

Bottom Line

Hope we helped you to better understand the causes and symptoms of Polaris ATV power steering problems. If you are having trouble with EPS, you should have it checked out by a professional, as there can be numerous causes. Make sure to take your Polaris ATV to an authorized dealer for service as soon as possible, as power steering issues can be dangerous. Thanks for reading!

22 sportsman trail 570. Steering goes into death wobble with the front tires off. Sitting stationary in my garage. Dealer says Polaris says it's normal. Not buying that. Any ideas?
Dmitry Sapko 10-Nov-2023 Fri, 11:43 Confirm, Polaris says it's normal because they noticed this thing going on in various vehicles and now just don't want to issue a bulletin or recall. But I suppose there is nothing to worry about - getting used to it seems a good idea.
