Today, we'll tell you about the cat converter scrap price for the Range Rover vehicles of different generations. We'll also show you how to sell these parts at better prices. Here's what we will tell you today:

  • What should you know about catalytic converters in your Range Rover?
  • How much should a used and clogged cat converter from a Range Rover cost?
  • Where can you sell a catalytic converter from your British SUV?
  • Will you need a replacement cat converter and how much can it cost?

Let's get started!

Some facts about Land Rover Range Rover catalytic converters

First of all, you should know that all Ranger Rovers that are still alive and on the roads have cat converters in their exhaust systems. Older SUVs may have one main catalytic converter while some newer models will have up to 4 cats including pre-cats and main cats that are used to clean exhaust gasses before releasing them into the atmosphere.

You will probably inquire about the 2005-2015 Range Rover cat converters because exactly this segment still has OEM converters and they are now at the risk of dying because of mileage and age. We'll look generally at all Land Rover Range Rover catalytic converters to give you a general overview of how you can sell them and how much you can get.

Here are some important facts:

  • the older vehicle may have more expensive cat converters, but usually, they are damaged and aren't going to cost a lot in the end;
  • in newer Land Rover SUVs, you are likely to find big assemblies of cat converters with different types and sizes of cats;
  • pre-cats are usually located near exhaust manifolds, they are smaller than the main parts but they still may cost some money;
  • also, main converters are placed closer to the muffler and are usually bigger and heavier than pre-cats;
  • the Land Rover brand hasn't always belonged to one company, so in different generations of the SUV you will find different types of converters;
  • you need to find the serial number on your converter, this will prove that the unit is OEM and can be sold at a good price.

Unfortunately, aftermarket catalytic converters from Land Rover Range Rover vehicles aren't going to cost a lot of money. These cats are not expensive because of different factors, but the main one is that initially, they didn't have a lot of precious metals inside.

So, it's worth reading the article further in that case only if you have the original (OEM) catalytic converter in your Range Rover and you want to sell it because it's clogged or damaged, or it's just not working properly and asks for a replacement. Already checked? So, let's go further.

How much should a used Ranger Rover cat cost?

We should describe two possible situations. The first one is when the cat is still working, it's not clogged, and it still can pass the fog test if installed in a Range Rover. In this case, you may advertise your cat on eBay and sell it for quite good money.

But in most cases, these used and old cats are clogged and damaged and can only be sold to recycling companies. The eventual price offer from a business that will buy your converter depends on a lot of things like prices for precious metals, availability of other converters on the market, condition of your cat, etc.

Also, the final price will depend on who you are going to sell the cat to:

  • middlemen and private buyers are not going to pay you a lot of money for the cat converter, but they buy quickly and give cash;
  • scrapyards are very popular solutions for car owners who want to sell catalytic converters, but these companies aren't going to pay you a lot of money;
  • exhaust shops and mechanics - these guys can buy a cat from you, but again, the price is going to be about half of what you can get in other places;
  • recycling companies - in our opinion, this is the best possible solution with legal procedure, quick sale, and no problems in the process.

Recycling companies always hunt for catalytic converters, so they will be glad to buy your old cat. Of course, it seems not so easy to sell old converters to recycling companies, but we'll tell you how you should do that. This will allow you to understand the current prices and make the right decision.

The average price for main converters from your Ranger Rover should be between $180 and $400 for each cat. It's not bad for a piece of scrap metal you'll never need anymore after you take it off a vehicle.

How to sell a Range Rover cat converter to a recycling company?

It's not hard to find a company that will be glad to pay money for your converter. But not every business that offers such a service is actually a recycling company. Why is it important to find exactly the business that recycles cats? Because this way you will get more money for your scrap part.

First of all, you should take the converter off a vehicle and clean it from road debris, dust, and other contaminants. The cleaner it is, the easier it will be to estimate the price. Bad rust should also be cleaned by a metal wire so that you could see the serial number of the cat.

After that, you will just need to do the following:

  • take pictures of the converter that you have in your hands - pay attention to the serial number, take the picture of it;
  • after that, go online and find websites representing companies that recycle catalytic converters and other car parts;
  • find the option to quote on these websites, you'll be able to inquire about the price without leaving your house or even garage;
  • send the pictures of your cat along with some basic information about your vehicle to these companies;
  • after that, wait for a day or two until all companies will answer (it's best to try it with numerous companies at once);
  • compare the offers you will get for your Range Rover catalytic converter and choose the best price.

In most cases, recycling companies will pay for shipping, so the only thing you will be left to do is to prepare the cat for shipping and to send it to a chosen company. It's a wonderful way to sell the cat. Even if you don't want to sell it at this price, at least, you will know how much recycling companies are offering and will have a certain price to rely on.

Of course, it's for you to choose whether you want to give your converter away for that money or not. But as our experience shows, there is no way you can find a better price for that piece of metal than the recycling companies offer.

Will you need to buy something instead of a clogged converter?

Once you have the converter deleted from the exhaust system, your Range Rover will become unable to go on the roads. First of all, it will be roaring like a tiger, but secondly, it will be emitting a huge amount of harmful gasses into the atmosphere.

In this case, you will have a couple of options:

  • installing a metal pipe instead of a converter - not a good decision because you will not pass the fog test with your vehicle;
  • buying a used converter - a really bad decision because you never know how long the old cat will be working;
  • getting a new aftermarket cat - this may cost you $200 - $500 and it's the most cost-efficient way to solve the problem;
  • getting a new OEM converter which may cost you up to $2,500 in some cases, plus some labor costs.

Of course, most Range Rover owners will opt for a new aftermarket converter. The only problem is that when it dies, you can't sell it for decent money. But with current prices for these OEM converters, buying them for an old car seems like a not very clever idea.

Final words

Your OEM catalytic converter from a Range Rover may still cost up to $400 even though it's clogged and not working properly. So, you can sell it to a recycling company and get some money for a replacement cat. Unfortunately, it's not quite legal to drive your Range Rover without a catalytic converter, so you will have to spend your money and time on that.
