What should you do if the "Service ESC" warning sign comes up?

The first thing you must understand is what triggered the warning light or message to come up in the first place. If the sign comes up because you are driving under a low traction condition, you only have to drive carefully, if it comes up because you deactivated the system manually, switch it back on any time you are ready.

But if it is on because the ESC system is not functioning properly, then it means it is due for inspection, in this case, you should take it to a car service to repair the system.

Signs of a faulty ESC

Below are some signs that your ESC is faulty and due for service.

1) ESC warning light

The ESC warning light on your vehicle's dashboard is designed to alert you when there is an issue with the system. If it stays illuminated or flashes, it indicates that there may be a problem that needs attention. Some of the factors responsible for the ESC warning light include electrical issues, a faulty wheel sensor, and a malfunctioning steering angle sensor.

2) Loss of stability and control

The purpose of ESC is to help maintain stability and control of the vehicle, especially during difficult driving conditions. If you experience a sudden loss of stability or control while driving, such as the vehicle skidding or sliding, it could be a sign that the ESC system is not functioning properly.

3) Unusual noises

Strange noises, like grinding or buzzing sounds, can be an indication of a malfunction in the ESC system. These noises may occur when the system is engaged or during normal driving, and it should be inspected further.

4) Wheel slippage

The ESC system is designed to detect and correct wheel slippage to maintain traction and stability. If you notice that one or more wheels are slipping or losing traction more frequently than usual, it may be a sign that the ESC system is not working correctly.

5) Inconsistent braking

The ESC system works together with the vehicle's braking system to help maintain stability. If you experience inconsistent braking, such as the brakes grabbing or pulsating, it could be a result of a malfunctioning ESC system.

If you encounter any of these signs, it is important to have your vehicle serviced by a professional. They can diagnose the issue and provide the necessary repairs or maintenance to ensure the ESC system functions properly. Remember, a well-functioning ESC system plays a crucial role in enhancing vehicle safety by helping to prevent loss of control and improving stability on the road.

Should you drive when the "Service ESC" warning sign comes on?

Even though this is possible, we do not recommend that you drive your car for a long time when the "Service ESC" message comes up because it merely means that every device related to the car's traction is not working. So, you may likely lose control of your vehicle on a slippery road which is not safe because it can lead to a ghastly accident.

However, if you must drive the car in this condition, then you must take necessary precautions such as driving slowly and avoiding slippery roads. There shouldn't be any serious problem as long as you drive carefully but don't try this over a long distance.

How do you fix the "Service ESC" warning sign?

As stated earlier, several factors cause a "Service ESC" warning in your car. However, this section explains how you can fix the warning sign.

1) Switch on the ESC system

You should first confirm if the ESC system is on. Someone may have mistakenly switched off the system without your knowledge. Follow the steps below to switch on the ESC system:

  • Find the ESC button in the dashboard. It normally has the icon of a car with skid marks.
  • Press the button to activate the system. The button that you press ensures that the system is turned back on and this automatically turns off the "Service ESC" warning light.
  • If the warning light still comes up, then the problem is not because the ESC was turned off manually.

2) Confirm that no other light is on

Conduct a visual check on the dashboard to ensure that no other light is on. You should note that a visual check does not necessarily reveal the exact problem but it helps you identify the issues that probably caused the "Service ESC" warning sign.

3) Replace the faulty wheel speed sensors

The "Service ESC" warning sign may be triggered due to a problem with the wheel speed sensor. If this is the case, replace the defective wheel sensors with a new one. The wheel speed sensors are affordable and can be replaced in pairs. After replacing the wheel speed sensors, drive the car for about a mile and the warning sign will disappear.

4) Adjust the steering angle sensors

A fault in the steering sensor can trigger the service ESC warning light. A very common reason that can offset the steering angle of your car is when the tires are not straight or when you position the steering wheel in the center. Adjust the steering angle so that the issue won't come up

5) Check the battery

Very often, the ESC error occurs and the car is hard to start when the 12V battery is weak. This affects the spark and all other important factors of engine work and this will inevitably affect the all car and the stability control system, too. Wek battery may be the actual culprit of your problems. Other than that, the ESC issues shouldn't affect the ability of the car to start.

How much does it cost to fix the "Service ESC" issue?

Fixing "Service ESC" issues is not so expensive. However, it depends on the specific issue and the model of your vehicle. For example, if the issue is a faulty wheel speed sensor, it may cost between $100 and $150. If the issue is related to the wheel steering angle sensors, the cost of fixing may range between $150 and $200.

To fix the "Service ESC" issue, it is recommended to consult with a professional at a certified automotive service center or dealership. They have the expertise and equipment to diagnose and repair any issues with the ESC system. Regular maintenance and inspection of the ESC system are also important to ensure it functions properly. If you notice any warning sign or unusual behavior related to ESC, it's best to have it checked by a professional to address any potential issues.

How to prevent issues with your ESC system

The only way to prevent problems with your ESC system is to conduct regular maintenance. There are different types of maintenance you should do when it comes to the ESC system.

1) Regular car service

This is the first step to take to prevent ESC issues with your car. Take your car to the mechanic shop for a professional service, the ESC mechanic will help you check the ESC sensors, the wirings, and other components and then diagnose the issue.

2) Regular wheel Maintenance

You must do regular maintenance of your car wheels; this is very important for the ESC system because it depends on wheel speed sensors for data. The maintenance process includes balancing, tire inflation, and alignment. This process prevents that tire from wearing and it other prevents other problems that may result from improper reading of the wheel speed sensor.

3) Braking System Maintenance

Brake system maintenance is important for your ESC system to function at its maximum level. This maintenance includes checking the brake pad, and replacing the fluid since the ESC depends on the brakes of each wheel to function properly.

4) Clean the Sensors regularly

Cleaning the sensors is part of the maintenance routine, ensure you clean the sensors properly as debris and mud can cause the ESC system to malfunction. Be careful while cleaning the sensors so that you won't damage it.

5) Drive carefully

Avoid driving on potholes or rough roads as this can damage the components of the ESC system, especially the sensors. So, you have to drive cautiously on rough terrain to reduce the impact it may cause.

Wrapping up

The ESC system is a very important feature that improves the stability and control of the vehicle and it is very helpful in difficult driving conditions as it prevents severe accidents. This is why you must check the ESC system regularly.

Now that you already know what the "Service ESC" warning sign means, you shouldn't hesitate to contact a professional service for help any time the warning sign comes up on your dashboard.
