Tesla Edit Design Button Gone – What's Wrong?

Tesla has a pretty great order service on their website where you create an account and can get notified of any changes in the process of delivery of your vehicle. Unfortunately, the majority of Tesla vehicles are now delivered for quite a long time - up to a year sometimes. And this makes it hard for some of us to order the car knowing that we can change our minds.

For this, Tesla introduced the "Edit Design" button in your profile. It becomes available once you've ordered the car. Tesla clearly says on their website that you can edit the design of your car including the trim, color, additional functions, and features till the date of the final invoice. It's cool, but many of you had problems with the "Edit Design" button, so I decided to write a short article to clarify that.

Let's get started!

Why don't I see the Edit Design button in my Tesla app or website?

Well, the Edit Design button is available for those who actually ordered the car and made a deposit. If you did everything correctly, you can see the Edit Design button in your profile. It's on the page that tells you about the status of the delivery and the expected delivery date.

Some people use this Edit Design function to postpone their delivery. For example, if you want to get a batter tax credit but it will only be introduced in the next year, you can edit the design of your Tesla to the base trim and it will seriously move the expected date of delivery.

But what to do if the button disappeared? Here are some reasons for that:

1) You didn't pay the deposit

In this case, the vehicle is still not ordered and you can't edit the design because there is nothing to edit. Maybe, there was a problem saving your chosen details or the payment didn't go through. If you actually paid the deposit and still don't see the ordered car in your account, you should contact the support immediately.

2) You have already received the final invoice

Tesla is pretty unpredictable in terms of delivery time. One of my friends ordered the Model X with a lot of add-ons and in one week the invoice was in his mailbox. He couldn't edit anything once Tesla issued the final invoice.

So, if the invoice has already been issued, it means that your car is ready and is right now being delivered to your city or town. It's time to pay for it and no, Tesla won't allow you to change its color or features at this point.

3) You have confirmed the payment method

There is an option in your Tesla profile to set the desired payment method. Once you set and verify the payment method, your Edit Design button disappears. I don't know why it works that way but Tesla proved in one of its forums that this is true.

If you still want to edit the design of your ordered vehicle, you need to contact the support and ask them to clear the payment method. This will get the Edit Design button back to where it should be.

4) There is a glitch

This is especially common if you are using an app. In this case, you will need to reinstall the app or maybe just visit the website. If you still don't see the desired button even when you are logged in on the website, you may need to contact the support anyway. Maybe, there is a glitch and your car is not displayed properly in the database of Tesla.

5) The car is still not ordered/confirmed

You can't edit the design of a vehicle that is still not properly ordered or confirmed. It means that if you just ordered the vehicle and made the payment 5 minutes ago, it may take some time for Tesla to transfer all the data into their database and let them be displayed on the website. If this doesn't happen after a day or two, you should do something. But if the Edit Design button is not there immediately after you confirm your order, there is nothing to worry about.

What are the serious problems with the "Edit Design" function?

You should understand that if you seriously change the trim or other features of your car, Tesla may not only change the delivery date significantly, but it will also set the new price. It will not only add money for additional features you've just added, but it will likely recalculate the price of the car according to today's prices.

So, if you ordered your Tesla half a year ago, you may have ordered it for, say, $60,000. The same Tesla today may cost $65,000 and you will have to pay more if you change the design now. Pay attention to these little tricks as getting back to your previous options may be impossible.
