Wyoming and Montana have the most Superchargers per 1 Million People: Our Research

For this research, I took the data about the number of Tesla Supercharger stations in different US states. I used official data from this Tesla page and also the data from the Supercharger.info website.

Here's what the map looks like, by the way:

So, here are the most crucial findings of this research for those who don't have time to read the article:

  • California has the most supercharger among US states, but it's only 5th according to the number of supercharger sites per 1 million people.
  • The highest number of superchargers by population is in Wyoming (18.83 per 1 million) and Montana (16.77 per 1 million).
  • The lowest number of superchargers by population is in Arkansas (0.65 per 1 million) and Hawaii (1.39 per 1 million).
  • Asia has 4.5% more supercharger sites than North America.

What are the states with the most Superchargers?

As of the end of February 2024, there are 6128 superchargers in the world, this is about 30% growth in comparison with February 2023.

In the US, there are currently 2180 superchargers. Interestingly, this is just 35.6% of all superchargers in the world.

Here's the list of the states with the most available superchargers:

It's quite obvious that the top 10 states with the most superchargers in them are the states with the most population. This is natural and expected.

But you'll be surprised by the rating of top 10 states according to the number of superchargers per 1 million people living in that state. For this analysis, I took the data in Wiki and compared it to the number of superchargers in each state.

Here is the chart:

Surprisingly, California is only the 5th in this rating. Although it has the most superchargers in its territory, this is also the most populated state in the US.

So, the leader is Wyoming with 11 superchargers and only 580,000 people living in this state. Which makes it 18.8 superchargers for 1 million people.

Here are the worst states according to the number of superchargers per 1 million people:

Michigan and Ohio are two surprising states to see in this rating. Although they have relatively many superchargers on their territory, they also have a lot of citizens, so this makes their rating pretty poor.

Superchargers around the world

I've also researched how superchargers have been growing in different regions. While North America is no longer the leader in the number of Tesla superchargers, I decided to learn how different regions tend to build new stalls for fast-charging electric vehicles.

Here are the results for 2014-2024 (December data are taken for every year):

111 map

Surprisingly, Asia (mainly, China) overtook North America (mainly the US) in the number of open and functioning Tesla supercharger sites by the end of 2022 and keeps growing faster now. For now, Asia has 4.5% more supercharger sites than North America.

According to Tesla, they own and operate all the Supercharger stalls on their own. So, it opens the question of why they see the Chinese market as more lucrative and potentially more beneficial for them than the US market.

US supercharger growth

Finally, we can calculate how fast the supercharger network grows in the US to see if we can conclude something from this and make any ideas on what to expect in the future.

111 map

We can see that the best growth was in the early years while after that Tesla idles at about 30% yearly growth of the supercharger network. The worst year was 2020 with just a 27.2% improvement and the best year was 2014 with a whopping 191.7% growth of the network.
