Toyota Tundra is a mid-sized pickup truck that is popular in the USA thanks to its all-purpose size and specs. This vehicle is really good in terms of longevity, equipment, reliability, comfort, and fuel consumption. The Tundra combines all important advantages that are vital for those who buy trucks. As with any other car on the market now, all Tundras have catalytic converters.
The longevity of this converter is also average - it should be around 100,000 miles or even less. So, what should you do once the cat converter in your Tundra is broken? We believe you should sell it because this converter still costs some money. Are you sure you don't want to compensate some money for your expensive converter replacement? What if we say that Tundras have one of the most expensive Toyota converters?
Here's what we are going to talk about:
- Toyota Tundra converters - type, size precious metals inside.
- What should you do when your Toyota Tundra cat converter is broken?
- How to sell a failing catalytic converter from a Toyota Tundra?
- What should be the price of the Tundra catalytic converter?
Let's get started!
Where is Toyota Tundra catalytic converter located?
So, first of all, you should know that a Tundra of the second generation (from 2007 till now) has four catalytic converters. They are small but still valuable. They are all integrated into the exhaust system and some of them are equipped with oxygen sensors. Of course, the configuration of the catalytic converter system depends much on the engine of your vehicle.
Toyota Tundra cars are optimal in terms of ecology among all trucks. Their cat converters are made to reduce the amount of harmful gasses released into the air when you drive your Japanese pickup truck.
Here's what you should know about the cats:
- all catalytic converters are located between the exhaust manifold and the muffler - underneath your vehicle;
- sometimes, the cats may be covered by a special heat screen that protects other parts from heating;
- the cat converters aren't welded into the exhaust pipes if they are original, they are integrated into the pipes;
- front catalytic converters that are closer to the engine are usually bigger than the back converters;
- also, you should know that the catalytic converters are not all very valuable, the front ones are pre-cats, but still, they cost some money.
Well, what you need to know is that you are going to spend a fortune when replacing those cat converters. As a rule, they all start failing at the same time, so you will have to buy four catalytic converters to replace the old ones. And we don't recommend cheap aftermarket cats because they will not live very long.
If you choose aftermarket converters, buy the more expensive ones. But the best choice is the original cat set. The whole set may cost you a lot because the single catalytic converter costs just a little less than $1000. But you still can't drive your truck without a proper catalytic system.
How much is the scrap catalytic converter from your Tundra?
Now that you know how much you are going to spend to install a new catalytic converter, you should also know that the old cats can be sold. They contain some precious metals and they are wanted by many recycling companies all over the US. It will not compensate you for the repair, but at least you will get some money.
So, the prices for scrap cats are not very high, we would say that the Tundra cats can cost $100 to $250. If your truck has four converters, each of them will cost about $100. If it's the type of engine that has two converters, you will be able to sell those cats for $200 or sometimes more.
Here's what influences the scrap price of the Tundra converter:
- the size and weight of the car - it's important for estimating the potential revenue of a recycling company;
- the price for the precious metals - we mainly speak about platinum, palladium, and also rhodium which are pretty valuable;
- the serial number and the type of cat - Toyota has used a couple of types and included the different amount of precious materials;
- the way you sell the converter - scrapyards will give you less money while some companies will be ready to give much more;
- shipping costs and other things that may change the price of your cat converter in the end.
Well, the converters are almost always valuable and you can get some money for them if you know how to sell them. But first of all, you should understand that the Tundra converters you are holding in your hands are original. If they are aftermarket, then you are just losing your time reading our article. Unfortunately, aftermarket cats are not valuable, they only cost $10 or something like that after they get broken.
How to know you have the original Toyota Tundra cat converters?
Make sure that your cat converters weren't welded into the exhaust pipes. If you see the welding line near them, they are most likely aftermarket. This line says that someone has already cut the original converters and sold them. Then they installed some aftermarket cats and kept driving the vehicle with them. Now you just don't have any chance to sell these cats at a good price.
Also, look at the converters. They should be heavy and they shouldn't rattle. Also, they should have a serial number on them. This will show that the converter was made by Toyota Corporation. One more sign showing that the catalytic converter is original is the Toyota logo on it. It's not that hard to see that the cat converter is original and valuable.
But where should you sell your cat to get some money?
Selling your Tundra cat converter at a good price
Let's imagine you have already taken the cat converters off your Tundra and now want to sell them. You can choose among a couple of options and they will all give you different results. It's important that a cat converter looks good and is original. It may have some rust on it, of course, that's OK. But holes and other damages will make the price drop sharply.
But the final price depends much on what source of selling your cat you will choose. We mean, you can decide to sell your catalytic converters to a local guy who says he's buying converters at a good price and never check the actual value of your cats. But you may be wiser and check out how much other companies and buyers will offer.
Here are the ways to sell your old cat converter from a Toyota Tundra:
- Scrapyards. You should just get your cat converters to a scrapyard in order to show them to a specialist. Your local scrapyards are likely to give you at least half of the actual price of the converters. So, the whole set of cats will cost about $200 there.
- Middlemen. These guys will buy the cat converters and they will even come to your house or garage to get them. Just call one of them and ask about the price. These middlemen can give you about $250 for the whole set of converters. Not much, but better than scrapyards.
- Private sales. You can sell your cats to a mechanic that replaces the converters. Or you can advertise your catalytic converter for sale on eBay or something like that. It's not very convenient and sometimes very long, but it can give you up to $500 for the whole set.
- Recycling companies. These companies have websites where you may quote. Just send them pictures of your Tundra converters and they will answer you back telling you the price of the cat. Usually, these companies offer about $450 for the whole set of converters, but the prices may vary.
Be careful with choosing a recycling company if you opt for this way to sell your cats. Better send your pictures to some companies and get more information. Then, you'll be able to choose among all offers and get the maximum price for your old cats.
Tundra converters are easy to sell. You will not need to wait for your buyer for ages. Just choose the right way to get more money.
Final words
Toyota Tundra has many converters in its exhaust system. Even though they are quite small, they still cost some money and you can easily sell them when they are broken. Never throw them away - always find some ways to get more money from your old cats. We recommend selling the cat converters to recycling companies. This is the most ecological way to sell your cats and it also gives you optimal prices.
You can try selling your cat on eBay or any other service like that, but it can take a lot of time and effort. Just remember that original cats are valuable and never sell them at a very low price.
