People keep asking us whether they can use their old wheels on their new cars and we are tired of answering privately. So today we want to share some tips on whether you can install 5x110 wheels to 5x112 hubs and the answer isn't as obvious as you could think. We know that some of you are pretty sure it's impossible and we'll change your mind.
Personally, we use nearly any 5-bolt wheels on nearly any 5-bolt hubs because we know the magic. But before we share it with you, we want to make sure that you won't ask these questions anymore. So let's see how it actually works when you need to choose a proper bolt pattern for your new wheels.
What does 5x110 mean?
When you see that your wheel shows a 5x110 bolt pattern, you may be sure that the wheel has 5 holes for bolts or studs. The first figure, 5, stands for the number of holes. So if you ever want to install a 4x100 wheel to a hub that has five bolt holes or 5 studs, you shouldn't even consider doing it. This won't work out well.
The last figure, 110, stands for the distance between the centers of the neighboring holes in the wheel. It means that those holes are placed 110 millimeters from each other and they form a pentagon.
Now, if your hub has a 5x112 pattern, it means that it also has 5 holes for bolts or five studs for nuts. But the centers of those holes or studs are placed 112 millimeters from each other forming a slightly larger pentagon. It means that just by putting somehow your 5x110 wheel to those holes or studs you will never be able to center the wheel properly. So your car will rather jump on the road than smoothly drive.
So the obvious answer to your question - no, you can't install the 5x110 wheels directly onto the 5x112 hubs. But here comes the magic.
How to install any wheels to any hub?
Currently, manufacturers all over the world offer a lot of wonderful adapters. And this is the answer to your dilemma. You can easily find some inexpensive adapters to fasten to your hubs and to ensure that your wheel will be fastened easily with no problems. These adapters may come in different sizes and shapes, so they are OK for you to use on 5x112 hubs.
Once you find a proper adapter, you should:
- Take off the original wheels that are now installed on your vehicle.
- Take the adapters and fasten them to your hubs. Make sure you do it correctly and fasten with the needed power.
- After that take your new wheels and fasten them to your adapters with original bolts.
- Check if the wheels are centered well and try driving.
It's as easy as that - no need to spend a lot of time on this. But remember one thing - the adapters have to be very reliable. So buying the cheapest ones is probably not a good option.
Final words
You can find some adapters to nearly any case, but make sure that the wheel you install onto your vehicle is actually the needed size. The wrong size including ET and other parameters may influence your driving safety and comfort. Also, the wrong wheel size may influence the suspension and shorten its lifespan. So make sure you know what you do.
