VW ID.4 Delivery Time - Here's What You Should Consider

Volkswagen has already pushed itself into the market of electric vehicles and we welcome this because the more companies we have on the market, the better prices we'll be offered by them. The VW ID.3 has been really successful in Europe, but America doesn't like small Golf-like cars. We need SUVs, and we want them to be beautiful. Just like the new ID.4.

But the fair question you may have in your mind is how long are you going to wait once you order the ID.4? Today, we'll tell you what we know about the delivery time of the Volkswagen ID.4 and we'll also tell you something about the vehicle from our first touch. Interested? Just keep reading and see if you still want to order this Volkswagen after you're done with this article.

vw id4 delivery time

Here's what we will discuss today:

  • How long do Americans need to wait after ordering the VW ID.4 electric vehicle?
  • Are there any options to get the ID.4 much faster?
  • Is it worth waiting? What's so good and bad in the new VW ID.4?
  • What are the most interesting alternatives for the Volkswagen ID.4 available in the US?

Let's get started!

How long does it take to get your hands on the ID.4?

The ID.4 is basically the first Volkswagen electric SUV. And this explains why so many people all over the world are ready to pay for it. In the US, Volkswagen spoilt its reputation with its diesel emission scandal, but electric cars of the brand are giving the company the new chance to try and conquer the market.

There is still one thing you should remember - the delivery time. The VW ID.4 entered production in 2020 and it was only sold in Europe that year. In 2021, it also started selling in the US and China. Although the Chinese market is important, it's absolutely independent and self-sufficient for Volkswagen, so the US deliveries don't depend much on Chinese sales.

So, here's what you should understand:

  • in 2022, the US market should start getting ID.4 vehicles from the American plant located in Tennessee, but little is known about it at the time we are writing this article;
  • as of the time we are researching the issue, all ID.4 SUVs are delivered to the US from the Zwickau plant in Germany;
  • also, Volkswagen just doesn't have so powerful production to make ID.4 cars in advance and deliver them to dealers for sale;
  • the company takes orders for the electric SUV and only then plans production to deliver the ordered vehicle;
  • when ordering the ID.4, you will need to pay a deposit which is $400 - the deposit is refundable if you change your mind;
  • the company says it will take about 4 months to deliver the ordered ID.4 from Germany based production plant to the buyer;
  • but we know for sure this is not true, and you'll need to wait at least twice as long.

So, we've spoken to a Volkswagen dealer (the dealer's representative didn't want us to publish any details on the dealership). And we've also spoken to a couple of VW ID.4 owners. And now we can say for sure that the approximate delivery time for your new ID.4 is 8-10 months.

Why is it so long? Because the SUVs are delivered now from Germany. Also, there are a lot of people who made deposits and are now waiting for their vehicles - the German plant just doesn't have the opportunity to manufacture more cars and deliver them faster than that.

Even if it could - you need to understand that cars are delivered by sea which takes at least 1 month. Then, they are loaded to tow trucks or to trains and are delivered to your state where additional logistics is needed.

Can you get your Volkswagen ID.4 faster than that?

There are basically two options for you if you don't want to make a deposit and then wait for 8 to 10 months until your Germany-made car arrives at your local dealership of Volkswagen:

You can buy the ID.4 from someone who has already got their delivery. Not all people are totally satisfied with their new Volkswagen electric SUVs, some of them just want another vehicle or realize they don't need the EV. So, they may sell the car to you at more or less the same price as the new vehicle costs.

Alternatively, you need to wait until the Volkswagen ID.4 is manufactured in the US, in Tennessee. This will allow you to buy it from a dealer after test-driving, just like you can buy a gas-powered Volkswagen. Or at least, you will not have to wait that long if you want to order a special trim of the ID.4.

Is waiting for so long a big problem for buyers? We don't think so. If you urgently need a new car, you will opt for a Chevy or a Ford that is easily available at dealerships. If you want exactly the Volkswagen, you will wait.

How long will this problem of delivery time be so sharp for the VW ID.4? We can't say for sure, but we predict that in 2024 these cars may be available at dealerships all over the country with zero waiting time.

Why should (or shouldn't) you opt for the VW ID.4?

The question of whether you should or shouldn't buy a certain vehicle is so personal that it's almost never worth discussing. But we will give it a try in our today's article. So, is it worth waiting almost a year to get the new Volkswagen ID.4?

We have some pros of the vehicle here:

  • EPA says, this vehicle will let you drive 275 miles between charges, this is a decent range whatever you compare it with;
  • the car looks cool and unusual, its design may be one of the most important advantages for those who don't like Tesla's simple design;
  • technologies are worth your money, all units are thought to be very durable and reliable and they have a solid warranty;
  • by the way, VW offers an 8-year warranty which can still be voided after 100,000 miles;
  • you may choose between rear- and all-wheel-drive vehicles (AWD is a best-seller, of course);
  • the interior is much better than of all gasoline-powered Volkswagens, it's a new approach to planning the space in the vehicle.

Well, yes, this vehicle will last long and will offer you a quiet ride with wonderful acceleration - just like the majority of other electric cars out there.

But are there any downsides in the VW ID.4 that may prevent you from buying it? Hard to say, but we'll try to find them:

  • the trunk is pretty small - maybe even the smallest among all EVs in this price range;
  • no buttons to control main functions - everything is controlled via the touch-screen which may be inappropriate for driving on busy roads;
  • lack of one-pedal driving like in most EVs in this price range - you will still need to remember about the brake pedal;
  • somewhat economical vehicle in the interior - they could have included more soft-touch panels or something.

Well, most of the cons of this vehicle are very personal and depend on what you expect from it. But we are pretty sure that the VW ID.4 will appeal to you once you drive it. Its ideal suspension and the wonderful motor will bring joy from every mile you will have driven.

What alternatives should you consider for the VW ID.4?

So, let's consider you aren't likely to wait 8 months till Volkswagen delivers your ID.4 electric SUV. What should you buy?

Given the VW costs $42,500 for the cheapest version, we have some ideas for you:

  • KIA Niro EV. You are likely to buy it without waiting for $39,000 and you'll be satisfied with what you get. Of course, the VW looks much better, but technically, these vehicles have a lot in common.
  • Hyundai Ioniq 5. Another Korean competitor offers a lot for less money. The starting price is about $40K, the range is more or less the same. Ioniq 5 looks a little worse inside, but it's still a very decent alternative for the ID.4.
  • Volvo XC40 Recharge. Yes, this one will cost more - about $52,000 for the base trim, but this trim will be better than the top trim of the VW ID.4. Volvo is a decent EV SUV, but again - waiting time may be a problem.
  • Chevrolet Bolt EUV. A very decent alternative in terms of what you get for the money. The cheapest version costs about $34,000 and offers a lot of comfort and drive. Of course, it will not have the same range, but if you don't care about the range, you should try Chevy.
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E. Starting at $45,000, the Mustang MACH-E is not a bad alternative for the Volkswagen ID.4. You will also need to wait, but obviously not 8 months. The Mustang is stylish, technically capable, and also a very good-to-drive vehicle.

Final words

It's hard to say whether the Volkswagen ID.4 is the best electric SUV out there for the money. Yes, you will get more from a Tesla Model Y, but you'll need to pay as much as you would pay for one-and-a-half ID.4s. The Volkswagen offers a good range, wonderful warranty, exquisite features, and unusual interior planning which will probably attract more clients.
