What Does TCL Mean on a Car?

TCL stands for "Traction Control Light". When you see one on the dashboard of your vehicle, it means that the traction control system is in action. Or it shows you that it has some issues.

The traction control system is very often misunderstood. Many people falsely believe it limits the car's speed on slippery roads or lock the wheels so the vehicle can easily lose handling. But this isn't true at all! It prevents skidding and therefore ensures better stability of your vehicle, and this allows you to drive faster and safer. Even if there aren't any problems with grip or ice under your tires, many modern cars have a TCL light that turns on every time you start them up. This is useless, but manufacturers use this feature to test the traction control sensors and ensure that everything is OK. Once you start the car, the light should go off in a couple of seconds. It didn't? You need to visit the service station and have your traction control modules checked.

Traction control issues aren't that dangerous for driving. But you need to know that once the traction control light is constantly on, the system doesn't work and it won't be able to help you out in bad weather or during skidding suddenly on the road. So better have this looked at by a mechanic.
