The ZF 9-speed transmission comes from ZF Friedrichshafen AG, a renowned German automotive technology company that supplies its transmissions to numerous carmakers such as Jeep, Land Rover, Honda, Chrysler, Fiat, BMW, Jaguar, etc. This 9-speed transmission was first introduced back at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show when the then-new Jeep Grand Cherokee showcased what was the very first 9-speed unit for any passenger car on the market.

One of the standout features of the ZF 9-Speed is the fact that it has 9 gears which means that the transmission can offer seamless and unintrusive shifts across the power band. 1) Rough and Delayed Shifting

The first thing to do should be to recalibrate the software, if that does not help, you should check the transmission fluid quality, mechanical wear, or the valve bodies. Always be sure to maintain your transmission, do fluid replacements when necessary, and keep the software up to date to solve this problem for good.

2) Burning Smells and Overheating

Burning smells and overheating also seem to be an issue with some ZF 9-speed units and the most common cause for that is low/contaminated/improper transmission fluid. To solve this, look for leaks and address any outstanding clutch and torque converter issues.

Should I Buy a Car With the ZF 9-Speed Transmission?

In order to make a sound purchasing decision with any car, you will have to balance your needs and wants and figure out if all of the advantages of this 9-speed transmission are enough to outweigh the drawbacks in your personal use case scenario.

As such, if you are after a fuel-efficient vehicle, one that is mostly used for commuting, this 9-speed transmission is going to be more than sufficient. It is a transmission designed for various driving conditions and types of cars which means that there is great variety in how it operates.

On the other hand, if you are after a more sporty driving experience, a manual transmission, or one that offers specific off-road modes (low range, locking diffs, crawl modes), this 9-speed is not the best bang for your buck.
