If you own a Mini car, you perfectly know that they love throwing codes and messages on the dash. Sometimes, these messages and warning lights are easy to understand. But very often, you will need some time and effort to get to the point that your car is trying to tell you.
Anyway, in this article, I will gather all the error messages in Mini cars that I've written about in this blog. When I write another article about Mini problems, I will link it here so that you can have a better database of these errors and can easily cope with them.
"Battery Discharged, Start Engine" message in Mini
When you are getting this message, there are issues with the 12V battery or the charging system in your car. If the battery replacement doesn't help you get rid of the message, try checking the alternator.
Also, it's important to check for drains. Battery power drains are very common for Mini cars and you can find a lot of common issues causing them just by researching this topic on the internet.
The battery may seem OK when you measure the voltage but it may drop badly when you crank the engine, so the battery management system in your Mini is smart enough to spot this and recommend you to charge the battery.
Battery discharged, start engine message highlights:
- Common reasons:low battery, power drain, bad alternator
- How to fix:check the battery voltage, replace the battery
- Possible consequences:when the battery isdead, you may get stranded
- Priority level:High
- Can you drive?Yes
- DIY repair:Possible
- Repair price range:$200-$450
"Engine Fault, Reduced Power" message in Mini
If your Mini says "Engine Fault, Reduced Power", it only means that there is an electronic issue registered in the ECU and the computer has decided to put your car in limp mode to avoid extra damage.
It doesn't automatically mean that the engine is on the edge of surviving. It only means that there is a code that may potentially mean a serious problem. But for proper inspection, you will need to find a good mechanic.
Unfortunately, when you see this message, your Mini is losing power and you can only drive slowly. So, if you are far away from the dealership or repair shop, you may choose to call a tow truck.
Engine fault, reduced power message highlights:
- Common reasons:code in the ECU, a potential problem with engine
- How to fix:check the codes, make sure the engine works well
- Possible consequences:potential engine damage
- Priority level:High
- Can you drive?Carefully
- DIY repair:Impossible
- Repair price range:$200-$1,500
EML light in Mini
The EML warning light in your Mini means the same as the previous error message. But it will not always decelerate your car, so it won't necessarily put it in limp mode.
The light just means that there is a problem with the engine management system. But in reality, it may show all kinds of different problems with the ECU, wiring, sensors, communication, connections, etc.
You may try reading the codes when you see the EML flashing or illuminating on the dash but, in most cases, you will need professional help to get the answer to your questions.
EML light highlights:
- Common reasons:engine management system issues, electronic problems
- How to fix:check the codes, take the car in for inspection
- Possible consequences:badissues with electronics
- Priority level:High
- Can you drive?Carefully
- DIY repair:Impossible
- Repair price range:$200-$550
Oil pressure light in Mini
If your Mini shows the oil pressure light when it idles, it means that the pressure of oil in the engine is not enough to keep it running properly.
The problem may be with the oil pump that isn't efficient enough. Or your engine may idle at a very low speed. This may cause the engine to fail eventually due to poor lubrication. Also, the issues with oil itself may cause this problem.
Whenever you see this, turn the engine off. Check the oil level, check for any leaks. Take the car in to have it inspected before it's too late.
Oil pressure light highlights:
- Common reasons:low oil pressure, low level of oil, pump issues
- How to fix:check oil level, take the car in ASAP
- Possible consequences:engine failure
- Priority level:High
- Can you drive?Not recommended
- DIY repair:Impossible
- Repair price range:$150-$1,000
