Ford Fusion Catalytic Converter Scrap Price – How Much Can You Get?

Catalytic converters usually work well for 10 years. After that it's just like a lottery - you can drive your vehicle for another 10 years with no major problems with a cat or you can be forced to replace the converter after it's clogged or just damaged. The replacement is never a cheap thing to do, so at least you should sell the old converter. And sometimes you can sell it at a good price.

Today, we'll be talking about Ford Fusion catalytic converters and their scrap prices. Getting a decent amount of money for them is actually possible, but you need to know how. It's not hard you will just need to find a good buyer for your converter, not take it to a local scrapyard as most people would do.

Ford Fusion converter scrap price

Here's what we are going to discuss:

  1. Ford Fusion cat converters in different generations.
  2. What's the average scrap price of a Fusion catalytic converter?
  3. How can you sell the cat from a Ford Fusion?
  4. Are Ford Fusion models prone to cat converter theft issues?

Let's get started!

Ford Fusion catalytic converter types and location

The first generation of the Fusion came out in America in 2006. After that, in 2010, it was refreshed to suit the buyers' requirements. IN 2013, we saw the second generation of the Fusion with a more exquisite design and wonderful technologies. This vehicle still looks good on the road and seems to be quite popular on the market of second-hand cars.

The first generation used only Duratec engines - starting with the base 2.3-liter 4-cylinder one and finishing with the 3.5-liter V6. While the second generation used the range of EcoBoost engines and also Duratec naturally aspirated versions. It doesn't matter much which engine you have in your Fusion, you are very much likely to have the same type of converter in all vehicles.

Here are some important facts to consider:

  • the V6 engines in the Fusion tend to have two pre-cats and one main cat while the L4 engines have one pre-cat and one main cat;
  • pre-cats are usually placed somewhere near exhaust manifolds, they are pretty small, but they still can be sold for some money;
  • main catalytic converters are located underneath the car, right near the muffler, but a little closer to the engine;
  • usually, bread-loaf catalytic converters are offered here, they are valuable but not as huge as torpedo ones, for example;
  • the converters will definitely have serial numbers and the Ford logo on them (or just serial numbers for older cats);
  • also, the OEM cats are not just welded into the exhaust assembly, they are integral parts of the assembly;
  • in most cases, OEM cats are sold by Ford dealers and part stores together with exhaust pipes for quick installation.

In many older Fusions, the cat converters have already been replaced. We've already told you that a catalytic converter will live approximately 10 years. So, most of the second-gen Fusions still have their original cats installed by Ford Motor Company. But most of the older first-gen converters have already been replaced.

If you or someone else have replaced the cat converter with an aftermarket one, you should just stop reading this article. In the US, aftermarket cats cost close to nothing. You can sell them to any of the local scrapyards for something about $20. But if your vehicle still has an OEM converter, the prices will be much more interesting.

How much should a Ford Fusion catalytic converter cost?

A cat converter that is OEM and not damaged much should cost about $180 to $250. This will work for the main cat. Pre-cats are usually cheaper and will cost up to $100 each.

This is the short answer to see the average prices for the cats. You should know that even clogged and malfunctioning catalytic converters are usually bought at the full price because this doesn't change much the amount of precious metals recycling companies can get out of the cat.

But still, there are some factors that will make your catalytic converter from a Ford Fusion more or less expensive. Here are the most important ones:

  1. The market for precious metals. We mean, prices go up and down every week and you can't predict what the price will be tomorrow. This is the strongest factor that influences the price of any catalytic converter.
  2. The condition. Well, a broken cat is still OK, but if it's destroyed and the ceramic honeycomb is just out of the cat, this piece of metal will not cost a dollar.
  3. Any special laws. Some states may impose additional taxes for recycling companies or just forbid companies and people to buy and sell anything that contains precious metals for cash. This means you can try and find some company in a neighboring state.
  4. The place you are selling your cat converter to. Choosing a good buyer is important and this will probably make your catalytic converter's price optimal if you pay attention to this factor.
  5. Other factors and circumstances. Prices for scrap catalytic converters vary and you should know some average figures in order to get the best offer.

Now you know that not all companies are going to provide the best prices for you. Why? Because not all companies actually recycle catalytic converters. Most buyers will just want to resell your cat converter from the Ford Fusion and to get as much revenue from this as possible.

So, why should you let them do it? Your main task is to find the company that will want to pay more for the cat and will even pay for shipping. Think it's impossible? Just read on to get the simple instruction.

Selling your Ford Fusion cat at a good price

You should know that the catalytic converter replacement for your vehicle is not a cheap thing, and you'll probably spend $500 to $1,600 to replace just one cat converter in a vehicle. Also, you can't drive your Fusion without a converter, it's illegal in most states.

To compensate some money and to have a return for your massive investments, you can sell the old cat converter to a recycling company. A direct sale to such a business is always the best idea you can get.

Here's how you can do it:

  • at first, make sure you have taken the catalytic converter off your vehicle;
  • then, make sure you are holding the original cat - find the serial number, for example;
  • take your phone out of your pocket and take some pictures showing the cat;
  • after that, google for some recycling companies that buy a catalytic converter from private people;
  • quote online - send the pictures of your cat and write all needed details about your vehicle;
  • wait until all the companies answer (the more companies you find, the more offers you get for comparison);
  • choose the best price offer - very often the prices will be completely different, and you need to pick the best one.

After you are done, you may contact the company again and ask them about the procedure. Usually, they will also advise you on the preparation for shipping. After that, your final task is to get the cat converter to the nearest office of a certain shipping company.

Everything is completely simple and doesn't require any special knowledge. If you are still considering selling a catalytic converter to a scrapyard just because you don't want to try your luck with recycling companies, you are making a mistake. Just try - it's easy and quick.

Do thieves want to take converters off your Ford Fusion?

Yes, they do want to get your converters, but the Fusion is still not the most popular car for these guys. They won't hunt for it because Fusions have quite a low ride height and it's not that easy to get under the car, especially if you have some kind of saw with you to cut off the converter.

So, to successfully make this, they will need to jack up the vehicle which is not always possible and convenient. That's why thieves will prefer some truck or minivan for stealing a cat converter. Though, you should still be careful when leaving your Fusion without any security in a high-risk area.

Although thieves will not be able to get up to $250 for the stolen cat converter, they will sell it to one of the scrapyards for $80-$100 and sometimes they are OK with that.

Final words

Your Ford Fusion may have a really precious catalytic converter in its exhaust system. And you can sell it after this converter stops working properly. The best way to sell a cat is to offer it to one of the recycling companies. You will get the best price offers and will be able to get free shipping and many other advantages.

Be careful with choosing a buyer - check some options before you make up your mind. Now you know the average prices for the Ford Fusion cats and pre-cats, so it will be hard to deceive you. We hope you choose the best way and sell your cat at a decent price.
