Ford catalytic converters have proved to be really efficient and long-lasting. These cats can live up to 150,000 miles and more. They are still expensive, but once you replace them with a new one, the converter will live another 150,000 miles. In the end, it will be destroyed and will stop functioning, so you will have to replace it again.

A broken catalytic converter will not allow you to pass a fog test. It will not reduce the amount of CO2 and other harmful substances that your car releases into the air. So, what should you do with your old converter once you have it in your hands? Should you just leave it somewhere at the service station? Or should you find a way to sell it as a scrap part?

Here’s what we are going to talk about today:

  1. What Ford vehicles have torpedo-type catalytic converters?
  2. How much can you trade your old cat for?
  3. Where can you sell the catalytic converter as a scrap part?
  4. How can you make even more money on your scrap converter?

Let’s get started!

Torpedo converters – what are they?

Torpedo converters are called this way because they actually look like a torpedo. They are very much like mufflers but they are absolutely round like barrels. This shape allows to efficiently work with exhaust gasses.

Torpedo converters are usually quite long. They are longer than usual types of cats. And they very often come in a system of two. This means that you will have two torpedo converters for sale when they start malfunctioning. Of course, this also means that you will have to buy two new converters.

Here are some things you should know about the converters of this type:

  • they are usually used on F-Series trucks and E-series vans with quite big engines like V8 and V6 units;
  • these catalytic converters contain rhodium, palladium, and platinum as the main catalysts that reduce the harmful exhaust;
  • also, they contain honeycomb made of special materials that don’t melt and don’t get damaged in high temperatures;
  • also, these converters work quite effectively and very long because they are long enough to clean more gasses.

The main thing is that the converter works really efficiently and it doesn’t need replacement every 50,000 miles. The bad thing is that the torpedo converters for Ford cars are quite expensive. If you want an original one, you will likely pay somewhere near $2,500 for a converter and also around $200 to $350 for labor to install them.

But you will be able to compensate some money by selling the old converter as scrap. Don’t just throw these things away, you can make some money.

How much are the torpedo converters in Ford?

The first thing you will need to do is to understand whether your converter is a stock part. If it’s an aftermarket converter, its price will be just around $30 to $50 depending on the manufacturer. But if it’s a stock part, you can sell it at a much higher price.

So, the average scrap price for a Ford torpedo catalytic converter is $400. These torpedo converters are quite big and they contain quite a lot of precious metals and other materials one can sell.

But the final price depends on several factors:

  • year of manufacturing – older cats are sometimes destroyed and they don’t contain all the metals a scrapyard will want to get out of it;
  • serial number – some converters are cheaper than the others just because Ford included less amount of precious metals in them;
  • also, the condition of the converter matters – some of them will be rusty and have holes in them, so a scrapyard will not want to pay a lot;
  • the way you sell your old cat matters too – some scrap yards will only give $200 for it while others will be glad to pay $700.

So, as you see, it matters how you sell your scrap catalytic converters and what they look like. In this article, we’ll give you some tips on how you can make more money when you have an old Ford torpedo catalytic converter in your hands. Yes, it’s not actually making money, it’s rather compensating some expenses for a new converter. But still.

Who do you sell your torpedo catalytic converter?

Selling a scrap part or some scrap metal from your car is not a very simple thing to do. If you have a scrap starter or some broken cylinder head, you may just leave it at the station and the guys will sell it as scrap metal. But converters are different – they can earn more than just a couple of dollars, they can earn you a couple of hundred dollars.

So, here we found four main ways to sell your old catalytic converter:

  1. A scrapyard. You may know that some car scrapyards are there in your area and they buy scrap metal. They can also buy your catalytic converter. But it is the cheapest way to sell your old cat. You will only get $50 or something.
  2. A middleman. Just google something like where you can sell the scrap converter and you will find a lot of forums and blogs. They will have some links to the guys who buy old cats in your area. They may even come to you so that you don’t pay any money for delivery. But the prices are still low because these guys want to make money reselling your old catalytic converters.
  3. A special company. Some companies make money by mining out the precious metals from catalytic converters. They have special equipment and they buy dozens of these converters every day. Then they melt them and get the metals they may sell to industries easily.
  4. Private announcements. You can even try to sell your old converter on the internet. Websites like eBay or something are available and you can advertise your old cat for sale. You will likely sell it to some enthusiasts who have equipment for melting these converters and getting precious metals out of them.

The last two ways are the most interesting if you want to sell your converter at a really good price. Any middleman and any car scrapyard will offer a decent price to you. They will just give a couple of bucks and then will try to resell the converter at a higher price. So why should you lose this money? You can find a better way to sell your scrap cat and get more money for it.

Selling your old torpedo cat online – how?

It’s not a very hard task to do. Again, here we’ll tell you how you can get more money for your Ford torpedo catalytic converter. We don’t guarantee that all companies will be ready to give a good price for your old converter. But we know how you can make them pay you more. You should not just find one company and agree with the price they are offering you.

Here’s the algorithm helping you sell the converter at a good price:

  1. Google for some companies that may buy your converter and they offer online applications. This is a vital factor.
  2. Take pictures of your catalytic converter that show it from different angles and also show its serial number.
  3. Send these pictures and the applications to all the companies that you managed to find – it may be two or five companies – the more, the better.
  4. Then wait until all these companies reply offering their prices. And just look which company offers the best price for your cat.
  5. Also, pay attention to delivery options. Some companies will offer free delivery while others will want you to pay for shipping.

All you need to do now is to choose the company you want to sell your old catalytic converter. Once you do it, just stick to the instructions you will be given to shipping your converter to that company.

Of course, it’s highly recommended to check the reviews and ratings of that company. Once you get the money, the deal is completed and you may celebrate.

Final words

As you see, the torpedo converters aren’t that bad in terms of selling them as scrap. Some of them may cost as much as $700 with average prices near $400 per a single converter. This is not bad at all, especially assuming that you will have to pay a lot for installing new converters. This is decent compensation and you shouldn’t lose a chance for taking it.

Also, pay attention that selling your Ford torpedo catalytic converter to any middlemen or scrapyards is not a very good idea. You will just get 5 times less money and will have to pay more for replacing the converter in your truck or van. So just stick to our tips and sell your old cat at a much higher price. Never agree to some offers until you get some other offers and compare them.
