Turbochargers have their own system of lubrication, so they get oil separately from the same oil pan that is used for other engine parts. But the trouble is that turbochargers have much more chances for oil leaks because they have high pressure of the oil inside. We discussed more about oil leaks in engine in this article.
If the turbocharger in your car isn't lubricated properly, it can cause problems with the mechanism. The turbine is a really tender unit that needs good oil with proper pressure. Any leaks will cause sharp pressure drop and problems with lubrication. If the leak is minor, you can probably repair the turbocharger.
Although, new types of turbochargers aren't usually repaired, they are changed. And this usually costs quite a lot of money. Minor repairs are still possible, but in most cases the service station will insist on the change of unit.
To prolong the lifetime of turbocharger, use high quality oil and pay attention to the recommended type of engine oil for your car. Otherwise, you won't be able to ensure the optimal lifetime of the unit. It's the bad or inappropriate oil that cause turbocharger death.
