Here's what we'll discuss in this article:

  • What kind of cat converters is installed in your Mercury Mountaineer?
  • How much can these catalytic converters cost?
  • What should you do to sell the catalytic converter at a higher price?
  • Are Mercury Mountaineers prone to cat converter theft?

Let's get started!

Types and location of converters in your Mercury Mountaineer

Mercury cars have never been extremely popular among Americans. The brand belongs to Ford and actually uses Ford technologies to build new cars. The Mountaineer was built to compete with the Land Cruiser and also the Range Rover while being offered at a much more affordable price. This was one of the cheapest cars in the class of big SUVs.

But still, the Mountaineer wasn't very popular. In its best years, it sold about 50,000 cars a year in the US which is not great at all. The vehicle was first presented in 1996 and up to 2010, it had changed 3 generations.

Here's what you should know about the cat converter of the Mountaineer:

  • the SUV used several types of Ford engines including 4.0L V6, 5.0L V8, and 4.6L V8, so it used Ford cat converters;
  • in later models, you could find pre-cats near every exhaust manifold, but the main cat was still the most valuable part of the assembly;
  • the vehicle could have several types of Ford catalytic converters, mostly they were quite big, so pretty valuable;
  • the main cat was located under the vehicle, it was integrated into the exhaust system and placed near the muffler;
  • the cat quality is quite high, so even now, these cars often have OEM cats that were installed by the manufacturer;
  • unfortunately, a lot of Mountaineers now have aftermarket cats that are hard to sell at a decent price.

You should know that only Ford OEM cats from your Mercury can be sold at a good price. Any aftermarket cat will cost $20 to $35 and you should just give up reading the article if this is the case in your SUV. Aftermarket cats usually contain a small amount of precious metal and they are very risky to invest in.

If your vehicle still has an OEM converter, you can sell it at a much better price. But how much exactly will this converter cost? This depends on many factors and we should discuss them all before coming up with any average price.

How much should a Mercury cat converter cost?

The used converter from your Mercury Mountaineer should cost from $120 to $280 depending on some factors. First of all, you should know that this price is true for OEM main cats. Pre-cats will cost less than that - about $60 for a pre-cat in perfect condition. Sometimes, prices may be worse than our estimates.

The problem is that you just can't come up with any average price that will be true for a month or two. While all other parts of your Mercury Mountaineer have a stable price with a certain deterioration over time, the cats may go up and down in price every day. Why? Let's see.

Here are some factors influencing the price of a cat converter from a Mercury SUV:

  • the problems it has - the condition of the converter is very important because completely broken and empty cats cost nothing;
  • also, the size and the type of the cat are important - the Mountaineer can have different types of Ford cats with different amount of precious material;
  • one more important factor is the price of precious metals such as platinum, palladium, and rhodium;
  • lastly, the place where you are selling this converter is important because different companies will offer different prices.

Usually, Mercury SUV owners just can't change the most important factors like the type, the condition of the cat converter, and also the prices for precious metals. But what you can do is find the best buyer for your cat. While one company will offer just $60 for the main cat in a good condition, some other businesses may give you $280 for the same part.

Who can buy your Mercury converter?

Another important question is who you can sell the catalytic converter to. Well, some options won't be good for everyone. For example, if your cat converter is still able to help the vehicle pass the fog test, you can sell it as a used part on eBay and get a relatively good price. But usually, the thing is that the converter is broken or damaged or just doesn't work properly.

In this case, you can still sell it to a scrapyard or a middleman, or even to an exhaust shop or car parts store. All these options are bad because all of these are going to just sell the cat converter from the Mountaineer to a recycling company and earn some money from that.

The question is why should you let them earn money on something that belongs to you now? You can easily sell the cat to a recycling company just by following these simple steps:

  • get the cat and look at it, find out if its severely damaged and can't be used anymore;
  • take pictures of the converter paying attention to damages and, most importantly, to the serial number;
  • find companies that can buy catalytic converters - make sure those are recycling companies - just by using search engines like Google;
  • then, you should send those pictures of a cat converter with a little description (model and year of the vehicle, type of engine, etc.) to those companies;
  • after that, just wait for a day or two while the companies will come up with the prices they can offer for the cat.

It won't take a lot of time, but you will know the average price as well as the maximum possible price for your cat with a quick sale. Usually, these recycling companies will also pay for shipping, so you will not be paying for anything.

You now can sell your Mercury Mountaineer catalytic converter easily and with no problems. Don't waste your time on scrapyards because they will offer something like half of the actual price. Of course, you may still try your luck and go to a scrapyard to check if we are right.

What about cat converter theft risk for the Mercury Mountaineer?

Your Mountaineer is one of the targets for catalytic converter thieves. They can easily get under your car with their instruments, cut the converter off, and leave unnoticed.

High clearance and a big and expensive cat are the most important factors why thieves are looking at any Mountaineer with their hearts beating faster. But what you can do to protect your vehicle?

Here are some ideas:

  • go to an exhaust shop near you and ask them if they have some solutions for protection - they may install special cages;
  • use metal wires to disturb any thief from cutting off the converter without spending a lot of time on this;
  • don't park your SUV in areas where thieves are most likely to encounter and never leave the vehicle overnight in these areas;
  • use secured parking places, especially for overnight parking;
  • park your SUV over some rock or any other object that will disturb a thief from cutting off the converter.

Your task is to make getting under the vehicle as hard as possible. This way, a thief will prefer some other vehicle because they hate difficulties that may enlarge the time of stealing a cat.

If you are planning to commit a crime and steal a cat converter, remember that you can be sentenced to jail. Also, don't think you can sell the stolen cat for a lot of money. Those stolen converters are sold for $20-$30 to illegal scrapyards and the earnings just aren't worth your freedom.

Final words

If you have a cat converter from your Mercury Mountaineer, you can easily sell it and get some revenue. Unfortunately, these cats are not extremely expensive, but still, you can get about $280, as of September 2022. This will reduce your expenses for a replacement catalytic converter and will help you get your Mountaineer back on the road. Try different ways but remember that recycling companies usually offer the best prices for used cats.
