It's not hard to figure out that the white smoke from car exhaust is the consequence of vapored water. And you will be lucky enough if it's actually water which gathered somehow in the exhaust pipe. As soon as it's gone with steam, your car will work without any problems. But sometimes the things aren't that good.
White smoke can also be the result of antifreeze getting into the combustion chamber or to cylinders. This is possible when the head gasket is blown or when the cylinder block is damaged. For example, the crack in cylinder block will result in coolant leaks to the inner part of the engine. The worst thing is that you won't see any damages until you take the engine apart.
If the trouble appeared because of antifreeze issues, the white smoke will be quite thick and it won't disappear after some time. It's not a good idea to keep driving the car in such situation. The engine may be broken any time.
But if the smoke is gone after the engine worked for some time, it may be a minor trouble. What you need to do in this case is to keep watching how the exhaust pipe is doing each time you start your car. Also, try to notice if there is intensive smoke when you drive the vehicle.
