Starter Is Clicking And Engine Doesn’t Start – Why?

If the starter in your car is clicking and it doesn't start the engine, the most obvious reason for this is failed relay. Also, one more possible reason is the stuck starter motor. In this case, starter relay turns on, but the battery power isn't enough to start moving the starter motor which is stuck. Clicking noise from starter can repeat all the time or the starter can start rotating after it clicks some times.

First thing to do if you hear clicking noise instead of starting engine, is to turn the key to off position or to take the finger off the start button. After a couple of seconds, you can try to start the engine again. Even if you hear the clicking noise 5 or 7 times, it doesn't mean that the car won't start. The relay can finally work, so there is a chance you can do without tow truck.

But if the clicking continues even after you tried a dozen of times to start the engine, the things aren't so good. The starter is probably dead and you'll need to repair or change it. One way to deal with the problem is to push the car and try to start it without the starter. But it will work with manual transmission only.

Otherwise, you'll need to tow your car to the service station to have it repaired.
